What are you wearing to Commencement?

I’m in need of some inspiration! What are you wearing to your graduate’s Commencement this year? I’ll be attending an early June ceremony New England. Hoping the discussion will give me the ‘oomph!’ I need to make some decisions! Suppose flats/low heels are wise as the ceremony is outside and we will be walking a fair distance.

Well … I wore a comfortable longer knit dress, with a sun hat, low heeled walking shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses. I saw all kinds of outfits – from more casual to much more dressy. We had a lot of walking to do, and seating was on the stadium bleachers on the sunny side. It was Memorial Day weekend in upstate New York.

I wearing this for my son’s fiancee’s graduation from her doctoral program: http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/index.jsp?productId=91762156&cp=1766613.3154363&fd=2&ab=ln_women_cs_dresses&ff=SizeGeneral&fg=Size&fv=SQ000000014QS2&parentPage=family&selectedSize=2&selectedSizeSkus=[23888464]

Lovely, @VeryHappy! That’s such s cheery color!

I will admit to have given this no thought at all. But with the wether we’ve been having lately, I don’t even know what season to dress for.
I love that blue dress @VeryHappy, but I’m not so fond of wearing things so short these days.

So pretty! That’s one of my favorite colors.

Outside ceremony+lots of walking=maxi dress with sun hat and sandals for me. Like this:

Vh, Lovely dress!

flats, pleated knee length skirt, cardigan and button down. In the school colors. Or, LandsEnd ponte sheath dress (they have pockets for the tissues!). Very comfy and warm.

My son graduated last year at the very end of May in Maine. It was beautiful, warm and sunny on the Saturaday for the Baccalaureate but dropped 40 degrees and was freezing cold the day of graduation (and it was held indoors because of the rain.) My suggestion is to bring several outfits.

I wore a sleeveless dress, heels ( I never do flats when I’m dressed up) and my legs were bare. Fortunately, I did have my leather jacket with me but I was still freezing walking to the reception after.

I would totally rock school colors-that’s an awesome idea @greenbutton .

@1214mom: I can assure you, it’s not at all that short on me. The model is 5’ 10". I’m 5’ 0".

Went casual- pants and nice short sleeved shirt as I recall. Fit the school’s vibe and my (lack of) fashion sense. I’m tall and those “knee length” dresses are always too short (HS was eons ago) and/or too short waisted- even plus sizes are for short people in general! Nobody cares what you look like- the grads wear all sorts of clothing under their gowns as well. We were going to lunch at a casual place- no overdressing for me.

I also wore slacks and a nice top. The students wore a huge assortment of things. I felt bad for the female grads who had bleeding heels because the shoes were cutting into the heel. It looked painful. My kids went for comfort–outfit and footwear but can’t recall details any more.

I’m wearing a blue sleeveless sheath dress (school color) with a wrap in in case it’s cold, and low wedge heels (ceremony is on the the lawn). Graduation is in Massachusetts at the end of May. It could be 90 degrees or it could be 55.

It shows up in the pictures. I was going to wear the same outfit I wore to my kid’s HS grad until I realized I wouldn’t want the same showing up four years later in pictures.

Outdoor graduation in Virginia: sleeveless knee-length dress in school color (and jacket for the first hour or so when it was chilly) and wedges. Waterproof, sweat-proof makeup as much as possible. Wish I had put my hair up, though, as it was a frizzy mess after the heat and humidity! Should have taken the family photos before the ceremony.

I am sitting here in the slacks and top I’m wearing to this afternoon’s ceremony in D3’s school. It’s indoors. We’re skipping the big event in the stadium tomorrow, which is probably a good idea since the forecast is for 100% chance of thunderstorms.

As it happens, DH and I independently chose outfits with a similar color palette, so we’re going to look terrific together in the photos!

We have been advised to wear winter coats, scarves, hats, and gloves tomorrow. The covered venue is typically about 40 degrees at graduation with the surrounding area at least 10 degrees warmer. I am dressing for warmth so will be wearing thick ponte pants over Uniqlo long johns, Uniqlo long sleeve underlay on top, cashmere turtleneck, merino wool pullover, and DD’s puffer coat. Oh, and fleece lined mittens and probably flatform shoes to insulate against the concrete slab. I am a Californian who runs cold, so any temps below 50 are a challenge, especially if it involves sitting for hours. I don’t do football games.

@VeryHappy, I hope you don’t think I was trying to say the dress was too short for you. I am on the tall side, and gravity seems to have taken over a little in places I wish it wouldn’t, so I’m trying to figure out what length is appropriate for me. The blue dress is very pretty, and one of my favorite colors.

I will need 3 outfits, one for the convocation, commencement, and a graduation party I am hosting for D2’s friends. II will be wearing a dress and flats for those events. D2’s school is huge, so the commencement is at the stadium. On a sunny day, you feel like a turkey baking in an oven.
