What are your must haves when you travel?

I am packing again tonight getting ready to get on a plane tomorrow. I get into an auto mode in terms what I throw into my carry on and into my luggage. Here are some of my must haves:

1) Passport, ids
2) Blackberry, personal cell phone, and everything that goes to support those things.
3) iPad
4) sound cancellation earphone
5) cashmere wrap and slippers for the plane
6) go through my different currency to figure out which ones I need to have with me.
7) People magazine(s)

Some people need their own pillow, blanket, family picture frame, food, neck rest…

What are your must haves when you travel?

my kindle! also chapstick and moisterizer in my carry on since the plane is so dehydrating.

small umbrella

socks to wear on the hotel floor

gum to chew on the plane so ears pop

camera

if flying a map of the airport I’m going to land at (makes me feel more comfortable to see the layout)

A girlfriend of mine used carry a Lysol to spread the hotel furniture.

hand sanitizer
antibacterial wipes (easier to use to wipe down hotel room surfaces and tv remote!
chewing gum for plane
Tums!

foam earplugs, neti pot, easy to eat food I can slip in my purse (nuts, dried fuirt, bars), laptop, AMEX and visa card and if it is an international trip - update the “if I get hit by a bus” folder at home that has all the instructions for where everything is, where the accounts are etc.

IPOD, gum, book usually light reading as I get nervous and I dont have to concentrate too hard. sweater.

An assortment of medicines for every minor ailment that might come up: Imodium, antacids, Excedrin, a band-aid, etc.

My papers: itinerary, maps, etc.

I also pack a large candy bar (usually Snickers or Baby Ruth) in case I get stuck hungry somewhere and can’t buy a meal for some reason or another.

Reading material: I bring all the subscription magazines I’m behind on and get caught up: Smithsonian Magazine (my favorite), New York Magazine, Sports Illustrated.

lilmom - would you sit on a bed before you take the bedspread off? My girlfriend used to tell me never to do that.

for a long flight - toothpaste and toothbrush; gentle wipes; no jet lag

We always pack a flashlight (small) and a corkscrew.

Because domestic travel is intrinsically safe?

Another travel tip: never go “hiking” within a hundred miles of the borders of either North Korea or Iran. Otherwise, either Bill or Hillary Clinton is going to have to fly over there and plead for your release.

My son was up by N. Korea last summer. Gave me the willies, but he thought it was interesting…Luckily he’d heard an interview with the young women who were captured, and hopefully knew what to avoid.

Essentials-full change of clothing, in case luggage is delayed, cosmetics, lotion, medication. I need something engrossing to read, back copies of the Atlantic or a long involved book. Tums, a hat, phrase book if traveling internationally, for a final language crash course en route. My favorite item, my Swiss Army knife now has to be checked.

Cashmere wrap-I like that idea! How cozy.

You forgot your boarding pass.

Anyone else have trouble with an iPad when traveling? I have and the explanation seems to be the antenna is weak. So it come off my list replaced by the small Macbook air.

I need to sleep with an extremely flat pillow. Hotels never have flat pillows, so I bring my own. And a portable fan for background noise.

a solution for the background noise is to set the hotel air system on “on- low” instead of auto. so it runs even when not producing heat or cool.

A sweater or a wrap, shoes I can slip off, a bag of almonds, and my Kindle

Not a big problem. It’s easy to print out another one at the kiosks in the airport.
