What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

Come to WA!

Oh, you bet, the second our son OK’s it, which means whenever work-from-home 30 somethings get vaccinated. Hopefully summer? With no cruises, hotels should be a bargain. We had a great day trip with him to Ranier in 2019. We’ve been to the San Juans but he hasn’t, so that would be an option.

So sorry you got sick! We are about to take our first flight in a year, but fortunately we are vaccinated (DH will have only had his second shot for a week when we fly, so is still building his immunity.). But, I was confused by one thing you mentioned. I’d read you are supposed to put the air things above you blowing on you (which I dislike but will do if its advised) rather than away from you. Is there an update since this was in a Forbes article this past summer? “ * Once boarded, travelers should turn on the air vent above their seat, which will blow filtered air directly onto them. Airplanes have high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, which filter out more than 99% of airborne microbes, including viruses. “The air on most aircraft is as clean as you would find in the operating room of a hospital,” says Spicer.”

@jym626 I had it blowing over the top of my head (but could still feel the air), so not sure if that was the right or wrong way. I also had someone behind me remove their mask during flight, so I moved.

Timing is such that I just don’t believe it could have occurred outside of the travel day, since we were not around anyone (or any place) for many days before or after. But there are a number of other locations it could have occurred besides the plane. We were also in a car rental agency briefly, and 2 different airports (no non-stop flights available).

@kjofkw how long are you waiting between positive test/illness, and a vaccine?

@compmom Approx. 45 days.

In my area, some hospitals were taking reservations for 65+ about 2 months out, and time slots filled extremely fast. I grabbed an appointment before I tested positive. Now, I’m afraid to give it up.

However, since they started this, there has been much more uncertainty about the number of doses various sites can expect, so no one is sure the appointments will be valid by then.

@Marilyn those pictures make my heart sing. So beautiful. We have friends who live in the San Juan’s and my H talked to them today. They invited us to stay on their farm in their guesthouse. They also invited us to join them in Hawaii at a family home. Depending on vaccines we will hopefully take them up on the offers.

When did this happen?? We are flying soon, and I just checked the seating and all the allowed seats in our section have been filled (still left empty center seats but the rows are filled in our section.) I am hoping we get a free upgrade.

Just an FYI for those flying – with the federal travel masking mandate, some things are changing with some airlines. Specifically, those who can’t wear a mask due to medical reasons will be allowed to fly maskless. There are steps that must be taken before flying to be allowed to do this. Right now it looks like just American and Alaska, but I’d be on the lookout to see if others change.

If they are allowing them to fly maskless they should seat them far away from others, perhaps with empty rows/seats around them.

@jym626 Mid January. SWA, so no seating chart, which is why we contacted them directly to verify capacity, about 3 days prior to the flight. This can of course change for the better or worse, but doubt significantly.

Be careful about assuming empty middle seats from a seating chart, unless the airlines policy is to hold them open. On some airlines, if you purchase the least expensive option, there is no seat assignment until check in. ,

Alaska just consolidated two flights into one for the trip we hope to take later in the year. Looks like there are still not a lot of takers for leisure travel.

Fortunately we are flying Delta, which has blocked off the middle seats though the end of March. We are currently upgraded t economy comfort, but there are only a few rows in that section and they are all filled. But first class currently looks pretty empty so I am crossing my fingers that we may get upgraded. No clue if they are doing any food/drink service, but I dont really care.

I’m the most comfortable flying Delta and have been pleased compared to another airline. I don’t mind at all if it’s not the least expensive. I feel safer. First and Comfort+ have typical beverages plus beer/wine. As far as I know, Main/Basic have the ziploc bag with snack/water and non alcoholic beverages if the flight is long enough. I’ve been fortunate to get upgraded the last few times I’ve flown so I’m not positive about that. Hope you get upgraded! Safe travels!

My 2 best friends and I are back to discussing our (twice now cancelled) Hawaii trip. We’re looking into Feb/Mar 2022. That will have made it exactly 2 years from our last Hawaii trip. By Feb 2022 we will have been vaccinated, and ready (we hope!) to get moving again!

I just read this piece telling more about one of our favorite TV Travel Show hosts, Ian Wright (Globetrekker and more). I don’t know if anyone else on here watches his shows or not, but we’re definitely more aligned with his type of travel and loves.

I wish I had enough money to travel as much as he has. Just reading this makes me eager to get out on the road or in the sky again going somewhere, seeing new things, meeting new people.

We are at the airport. Sadly, several people at the gate think that sitting here gives them permission to take their masks off. Ditto with several people deplaning. And several employees (eg people standing at booths with snacks) have their noses hanging out. This is very disappointing. We are wearing n95 masks and shields.

We haven’t travelled at all since the pandemic started. H and I are both working and I go in a few times a week to the school I work at. Yes, we’ve had to cancel some trips and it’s disappointing, but we’ve travelled a lot in past (lucky) and we’ll get to travel a lot in the future. I’m just grateful to be healthy and to still be employed. I know of people who’ve had it much harder. I consider myself lucky that the worst thing that’s happened during all this is having to cancel a trip, talk about first world problems.
I have a friend who lives in Northern California. They have a cabin about an hour away from where they live. They have still been going there, but they just stay at the cabin and it’s got a kitchen so they can still be self-sufficient and not go to restaurants. I think I’ll wait until both H and I are vaccinated before plane travel, but we’ll see.

In the New England area, Saint Pierre and Miquelon would be an alternative port call if France allows.

Of course, if the cruise line has an American flagged ship with an American crew, that will avoid the problem. The only such ship is NCL America’s Pride of America, which typically does Hawaii cruises without detour to Kiribati.

That NCL cruise around HI is the one we are looking at for May 2022.

Having just flown for the first time in a year, even though vaccinated I can’t even think about cruising even way down the road. I think we will be still masking for a long time and too many people are too cavalier about proper mask wearing. JMO.
