Post vaccine we’ve seen all ages of people traveling. There are differences in how much precautions one takes (beyond masking - things like eating out or distancing, etc), but all ages from toddlers to using walkers are out and about.
I think a lot of us feel more of a need to seize the day than hide so the unvaxxed/no precaution folks can play as they have been doing all along TBH (at least around where we live).
For us, we tip better than usual being thankful there are people who still continue to work the travel related jobs while we’re merely wandering and enjoying ourselves because we financially can. Tipping more isn’t putting a crimp on our finances. We’re also not into the bar, shopping, or major indoor event scene even without Covid, so no loss to us giving those up. We love the Great Outdoors. We have been dining inside when outdoors and Take Out don’t fit our plans, so there’s that. We go off hours to reduce crowds.
There’s risk in anything. At our age it seems to be a small one with vaccinations. We’re also going to be getting boosters soon - just in case - since ours are now over 6+ months ago.
We just got back from a wedding. Only 4 children there and everyone rsvping had to agree to be fully vaccinated 2 weeks before wedding. Masks were optional and some of the younger adults were wearing them. Most of us “older generation “ had our 3rd shot. It was supposed to be mostly outside but weather canceled that and it had to be indoors. You really need to plan for that possibility.
I fear that some wedding parties are going to get stuck with extra food plate fees when these “borderline” weather weddings (heading into harder seasons) have to make that last minute change from outside to inside. Some may change their plans to come when the hope for an outdoor wedding moves inside.
We flew from Maine to Daytona Beach on Friday. Planes were full. Very few people down here wear masks. Next week we’re going to Disney World, where masks are required indoors.
I would highly recommend Costa Rica as a Covid safe vacation destination. One additional thing is that before we could enter the airport (Liberia) we had to wash our hands on outside stations. We also had to do the same before some of our outdoor excursions. For that area of CR (western), total since the start of the pandemic they have had 11K cases, and according to all our drivers, tour guides, etc, outside of San Jose there is very little CV right now, and high vaccination rates. I did feel like temperature taking, masks in outdoor areas, etc were a bit overkill , but i followed the rules. If you are vaccinated you can enter the country without additional testing. Those who are not have extra stuff to do.
So now we are off to take a 5 day RC cruise (stopping in Mexico) during Thanksgiving week. I read that RC is stricter on masks and vaccines than other lines, but honestly I am finding that mask wearing amongst vaccinated in areas with outdoor airflow is overkill. I am following the CDC website for cruises and their color coding. It seems like cruising at this point is pretty safe . I will also get my Moderna Booster hopefully soon
After that , looking into 2022, we hope to finally get to Italy. I have heard that booking for summer 2022 airfares to Europe right now is reasonable. We might finally do the Hawaii cruise we had planned on doing pre Covid. I have decided that I get 5 weeks vacation at work and I want to travel while I can. Getting older, I cant do everything I used to. This trip Ziplining was troublesome . Hiking up is getting harder.
well. i am just floored. Delta just now cancelled my 6 AM flight to LGA. no explanation. Cancelled. The three of us were flying to visit our son; have a 16 yr old who’s never been to NYC.
anyone had this happen? do we have any rights? i have been on hold on customer service over an hour now. there is an option to get into LGA 12 hours later at midnight; but that cuts our trip so short. if anyone has had experience with a flight randomly cancelled; i’d love to hear what you did.
If you can get Delta on the phone, try to get them to book you on another airline’s flight. About all you can do it BEG. Be really nice to the booking agent on the phone. Ask about the other airports in NYC. Be creative. There may be non-direct flights that will get you there sooner (Philly, Cleveland, Pittsburgh?)
From twoinanddone : “If you can get Delta on the phone, try to get them to book you on another airline’s flight. About all you can do it BEG. Be really nice to the booking agent on the phone. Recently happened to my DH- early morning flight home from a business trip- San Fran to Chicago on United. Earliest flight home that had room was 12 hours later. He contacted customer service a few days later but basically no one cared:(
Happened to my D with Delta for an upcoming trip. Originally re-booked on a flight that would have cut her trip short by an entire day. Once she got a human being on the phone, they were able to work with her to figure out a more reasonable substitution. It did involve a stop over in a different city but the timing was much better.
so re: the cancelled flight> we were able to find room on a flight 12 hours later. Then - i waited 8+ hours on hold with customer service about moving our return flight back 12 hours . Which they did because they had room, but not because they thought they owed us. they would not put us on any other airline; i asked. I was also medium-nice to the rep which took all my patience, (so thanks for that tip).
just saying- we collectively decided not to do a big thanksgiving this year which means no air travel for our 3 college/grad/working kids. (partly because last year’s sparse thanksgiving was actually quite calm and peaceful. ) I hope that the airlines are equipped to handle all the upcoming traffic, knock on wood. Cancelled flights on tight schedules are harsh.
Y’all are making me wonder if we’re going to have to swim to the USVI for our trip there in Feb.
I wonder how long it would take to sail there if H were to get a boat. (Not really in the plans with the cost, etc, but he’d love it if that were an option.)
We didn’t even try to find a way for our son to fly down for either Thanksgiving or his birthday (late December). No flights or absurdly high priced - and we’re sticking with Alaska Air, who as far as I know hasn’t had the scheduling problems of other airlines. He may fly down for Chanukah; hasn’t decided.
We had tickets on Southwest to go to Chicago next week but cancelled and will try in the spring. They had already changed our flights which cut about five hours off our time there. It will be interesting to see if those flights actually occur on time.
Now we’re driving to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree in November for a delayed three day anniversary trip.
I flew to see my mom in August. Everything was great then. We are flying to see our daughter over thanksgiving, haven’t seen her since 09/20. Sorry but that’s been too long and we won’t cancel.
I had a friend who was flying from Vermont to Newark this past Sunday night. They ended up without a pilot for her flight and she got sent first to NC then Virginia and then to Newark - took something like 12 hours.
We’re leaving for Costa Rica tomorrow! DH and I had Covid tests this week just to be sure weren’t traveling sick. DH and his sister planned this trip and I’m along for the ride. Apparently, we’re going ziplining, too!
