What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

I’ve had Delta cancel flights before making us lose a day of vacation. I live close enough to the airport that I find going there and speaking with a ticket agent quicker than the hours long wait to get someone on the phone. Not a choice for everyone, but if you live close it could be worth it.

They keep changing the times of our flights for Thanksgiving. I am definitely nervous.

My sisters came to visit about 7 years ago. They flew Delta and were supposed to have a non-stop flight home (Hartford to Cleveland) that was leaving just after noon.

It was changed to a 6 a.m. departure…flight from Hartford to Atlanta to Cleveland. 12 hours of travel with the layover in Atlanta…instead of a quick direct flight. Delta didn’t care at all. The non-stop was cancelled.

Jet blue canceled my flight and put me on one with a connection and getting me to my destination about midnight. I was able to get the same flight one day later, and they allowed me to return one day later. This was in August.

For non covid medical reasons I need to cancel a United flight scheduled for next week.

Called United, 35 minutes on hold, canceled flight and now have a credit until end of 2022 with the amount I paid for exit row seats credited to my CC. They were great.

We are still doing our girl’s trip to Europe in 3 weeks. This has been postponed twice so far. But one of the ladies had to cancel because US requires the test to return to the US. She was so worried that she would get stuck in Spain for 10 days and miss her daughter’s wedding

But just this week one of the other ladies tore her knee playing soccer so we have to see if her doctor says she can go. She’s insisting she will go on crutches but that isn’t going to happen. That means I’ll have to carry all her luggage!

So looking like we will have to cancel again. This time the travel insurance fell through the cracks and it’s going to be a mess unraveling everything. Things like Sagrada Familia timed tickets are not refundable

I started looking at other dates to use my frequent flier miles and it looks like Europe is going to be packed next year. No seats available

I’m so sorry @coralbrook. It is so tough to plan ahead for a group in these times. Hugs.

My husband just came from the UK (business trip) and says there were no tourists. The plane was only 1/3 full. He said it would be perfect time to travel there to sightsee. Except we now hear about Delta plus. Ugh.

I assume Delta Plus isn’t an upgraded airline service.

Delta often canceled our non-stop flights even before Covid.

They would usually reschedule (on their own) with very strange combinations, flying at odd times, or connecting through airports in the opposite direction of travel, adding more travel time. Usually, we were able to use the change to our advantage at least a little, by choosing a better departure time (which had we booked initially, would cost more), or connecting through airport hubs where family /friends were located in case that flight was overbooked or canceled (it happened once).

Covid, fewer available flights, and stressed employees only make the above much more difficult.

I don’t know if possible to change flights via Chat, but if that’s an option, I also found the Chat feature preferable over waiting on hold. I’ve done this only 2 or 3 times in the past, and with other airlines besides Delta. With Chat, you can also receive a conversation copy for record (or cut and past the conversation).

Delta probably secretly hopes for a more dominant strain with no relation to Delta to appear. :stuck_out_tongue:

Glad you got that credit. I really still want my money refunded…wedding cancelled in August 2020…or even an extension of my voucher to the end if 2022 as they wedding is past the two year window for actually using it.

Guess I need to call when I have LOTS of time to be on hold!

I agree Europe is likely to be packed next year. I was browsing Rick Steves’ tours and almost everything was Waitlisted.

Now is actually a great time to go. Flights are still cheap, and COVID has receded dramatically in the last month or two. We enjoyed our trip in September and found things pretty normal, except for roads and public transport being quiet. My colleagues in Europe are now back in the office and traveling for work again with few concerns.

I believe new COVID cases have started to rise again across Europe, and dramatically in some countries (e.g. UK and many countries in Eastern Europe).

I wouldn’t think of Eastern Europe or the UK (incidentally is that still “in Europe”?) as attractive destinations in November. Maybe Greece (which is about the same as September). But I meant southern France, Italy or Spain.

7 day average cases Sept 1 vs today
France: 15174 vs 4847
Italy: 6077 vs 3011
Spain: 6818 vs 1907

And more to the point I can’t imagine things being any different next year. In fact these places may have even more cases than now if tourism resumes.

We are visiting NYC right now. Everything went relatively smoothly in terms of our flights and hotel check-in. We’ve been to two Broadway shows so far (and one more tonight) and of course the theatres are very crowded, small seats with everyone jam packed together. I guess it’s a test of how well mask and vaccine mandates work, because it certainly means being very crowded for an extended period of time in an old building that probably has poor air circulation.

Please be extra vigilant - a close friend and his family (all vaxxed) went to see 2 shows, all are now testing positive for Covid. These were vax & masks required. This whole Covid thing is really unsettling.

It is a real life test and many are willing to participate.

The reality is in the end we all make our own choices.

I’ve been travelling a lot lately. I have certainly exposed myself more because of this.

I arrived in Milan few days ago. I flew business and it was packed. All passengers adhered to masked up except when eating or drinking. The service was minimum. They quickly put the tray down and walked away, no extra drinks.
It was very quick and easy to get through the airport. They didn’t check for Covid vaccine or test validation. They relied on the airline to do all of that.
My hotel is very busy with guests. They checked for vaccinations and when eating indoor proof of vax is required. Vax is required for all indoor activities.

Agreed that it’s unsettling. We wore KN95 masks at the 3 shows. They also had staff walking around the aisles waving “Mask Up” signs. But I don’t know why they still sell food and drinks at these shows because it’s just an excuse for people (not us) to take off their masks.
