I know nothing about USVI, but if it’s not a huge island, could you get across to St. Croix? Costco is showing $1761 from St. Croix (and $2444 from St. Thomas). Have no idea if that’s reasonable to do, but decided to throw it out there.
Uber asked what flight I was on, so they timed the pickup.
We’ve seen the rental places allow St Thomas cars to go to St John by the very short ferry, but none that allow St Croix (which is further away). It was worth a shot though.
Thank you.
I’m trying to figure out whether to get trip insurance for a cruise at the end of Jan. We’ve only gotten that once before, but with Covid still keeping on, I wonder. The credit cards I used to purchase the cruise seem like they have comprehensive insurance, but I don’t know if it’s worth getting more. The cruise costs for four of us have only been less than 7K, but there’s all the other medical coverage.
Then again, I don’t want to double up. What are other people doing?
We’re not cruising, but my caution flags are waving with this new variant spooking the stock market today.
I’m pretty sure we get full credit on our lodging and flights so I’m not buying insurance. I’m just wondering if we’ll be able to get our Vitamin D recharge in Feb or if we have to sit through another episode of Crappy Covid. Last year we had made camping back up plans in FL that we happily used. This year we don’t have back up plans.
I would recommend the insurance, but it may already be too late - have you checked? You’ll want to ensure.
If you’re thinking of insuring, read the terms and see whether Covid is included or excluded as well as what entitles you to payment. Sone policies may exclude Covid.
If the cruise goes to international waters, I would get insurance and make sure it covers repatriation. My sister has first hand experience when a friend died when they were traveling together. The insurance handled all the details of repatriation arrangements. Well worth its cost.
Here’s theCDC guidance on cruising during Covid times.

I’ve been pondering this same question since we plan to return to traveling in March.
My thoughts…while it’s nice to cover the potential losses of the trip itself, I’m now more concerned with medical coverage. We charge our trips on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card - which covers most things up to 10K pp/20K per event. That puts that portion of the cost into the SWAN (Sleeps Well At Night) category.
Prior to COVID we carried an annual GeoBlue Trekker policy. They have now included COVID coverage so I’ll be putting that back into place. This particular policy doesn’t exclude pre-existing conditions and has reasonable limits on evacuation.
We also carry a 100K limit per instance for medical and evacuation on our American Express. This is no longer offered but they keep giving us the option to continue the plan…will see if that holds again.
I’m also looking into a MedJet membership. H is 67 and I’m 62. This also seems to fall into the SWAN category…still need to do a bit more investigation.
In the end, we can afford to lose the cost of a trip but could not easily absorb the cost of a medical emergency which required hospitalization etc. And, I am now more interested in coverage that lets me choose to be returned to the hospital of my choice back home (albeit with some restrictions and conditions).
I am trying to use some of my points (I’ve got gazillions).
Thanks for the nudge on health insurance abroad now that I have Medicare. I have to check on Amex evacuation insurance. I believe that my company has evacuation insurance for employees and their families, but will have to check again on that. In addition, I think my BCBS Medex Part D Supplemental Insurance has foreign coverage, but I’m not sure what is covered.
We got trip insurance for our European trip in 2020. It cost over $500 for the two of us. It was worthless because epidemics were excluded. They have us a credit but I think it’s expired now.
There are travel insurance policies now that do cover Covid.
I render what that $500+ policy would cost now, though. Ugh.
Medjet looks like a really good option. I don’t think it’s worth it for this cruise, though, only eight days in the Caribbean, seems like medical transport wouldn’t be that crazy expensive from there. Maybe I’ll get one of these policies that’s more comprehensive and covers 50-100K of transport costs.
D is supposed to be doing a trip abroad in Morocco (through her school) for the month of January. Would you all anticipate this being cancelled due to the new variant? I’m thinking yes unless some really good news comes out in the next couple of weeks.
Every time I read the subject “What are your thoughts about travel” I want to reply…all of them, I have all the thoughts about travel all the time.
That is something I miss the most during these unsettled times. I’m used to 3-4 trips a year for fun and adventures. I’m been “lucky” to have rented a cabin in the woods with my best friend, rented another cabin in the woods with my D, and went for a very quiet week to Maui, also with my best friend. 3 of us have a quiet 2 weeks coming in Feb/Mar, to Maui and Big Island. I eagerly await that. They do as well. I love to take cruises (as does my best friend) but neither of us is “ready” for that yet. I actually spend time wondering what it will take for me to be “ready” - we are vaxxed, and I know the lines are verifying, but it still doesn’t sit well with me. Maybe mid 2022 - ‘baby steps’ I’m told…
I think it will depend upon data they find between now and then, esp if it’s a more dangerous (deadly) variant vs “just” more transmittable (I think that’s certain?) and if the current vaxxes work or not, esp with severe cases.
From what I’ve been reading, it’s too new to know, but data should be around within a couple more weeks to a month.
Her school might opt to err on “safer” though. Time will tell.
We have a cruise in January, I did not buy extra insurance other than what what comes with my Amex platinum. The cruise line itself has a Covid cancellation, that you can cancel and move the amount you paid to a future cruise.
