We love to travel and like to do many different kinds of vacations. We live near the beach in San Diego so we don’t normally seek out beach types of vacations except for going to Bermuda to visit family. We also love a good road trip to ski or visit national parks and hiking. We like to visit historic sites and museums wherever we are. Whether we travel in the country or outside we love to have dinner sitting at the bar in local restaurants so we can chat we people that live there.
So, now he changed his mind. One is allowed to do that.in this country.
Convenient, no?
Of course there will be some people who are so selfish they don’t care about anyone else but themselves and their wants. Hopefully, most people are more considerate of others.
@thumper1 I think your trip sounds feasible because you can drive and because the house is big enough. It is different from the trip I want to take to see family, which requires flying plus staying in a hotel and then another short flight or long bus ride. ( That one would be fine as far as social distancing once we get there…and I would go if we could get there more easily.
Any travel in our family is hypothetical at this time but we do live in a vacation destination. Husband will be doing PT for his shoulder surgery starting Monday twice a week. Our PT place is a block from the beach and I have to drive him, so I’ll be taking long ocean walks.
Hah - kept trying to say l o n g beach and autocorrect kept changing it to Long Beach.
If son ever feels safe to travel, I’d buy him a first class seat on Alaska Airlines. I haven’t seen any reports on them in the news, but I think they’re pretty careful. Anyone have first hand experience?

Wonder what the quarantine in CT will entail. My D will be going back to grad school there in August. Has own apartment. Has been in SC since spring break. Will this mean she can’t go buy groceries when she returns? Can she go walk around the block? Pick up her prescriptions? Other than that she lives alone. I’m asssuming closer to beginning of school Yale will have specific guidance for kids coming from those states.
^Good questions, @scmom12. In Maine, CDC made it clear on their Facebook page that you couldn’t go ANYWHERE out of your residence or place of lodging during the quarantine. At the SAME TIME, the governor was saying it was OK to go to to grocery store or other essential places during your two-week quarantine! I sent the Maine CDC a Facebook message asking for a clarification but never got a response. I really need to know since we’re going out of the state in a few weeks.
A friend in Calgary told me they are seeing US license plates all over Banff and Lake Louise. They suspect they are getting in by telling border agents they are driving to Alaska.
Canada made an exception for family members to be able to visit but they must quarantine.

@MaineLonghorn we do have about 6 weeks before she has to leave if she needs 14 days before the first event/meetings of the year although she might be able to attend virtually
I would plan on her bringing 2 weeks worth of groceries and other essentials like her prescriptions with her, if she is driving back to New Haven and if SC is still on the quarantine list. If she is flying she could schedule a grocery delivery timed to arrive as soon as she gets there.
A quarantine is exactly that - stay indoors, no poking outside, and definitely no going to grocery stores or restaurants to pick up food orders.
We have cancelled my husband’s medical appointment in Houston next week. We’ll try again in a month or two. Things just look bad down there in the Medical District.
I haven’t heard anything recently about Alaska Airlines although pre-Covid, I flew with them multiple times and preferred them to Southwest. Unfortunately they stopped flying their nonstop route between San Diego and BWI which is the route I was mainly using them for. They are running a sale right now though if your son feels comfortable flying.
My friend just flew LA to DC on United to attend a medical appointment at the NIH. She said most of the middle seats were full, and many passengers, and even flight attendants, didn’t have on a mask or had it on incorrectly. She is a cancer patient and was very upset
I would be so mad! I guess if you have to travel now you need a mask, goggles and maybe a pashmina shawl wound round your head?
Planes are actually much safer than most people believe. Not risk free but not the extreme danger many think. If someone is especially vulnerable like a cancer patient, Lowest risk is to fly with with your household member in First class window seat and board at the end. See if your doc can get you an N95. They likely can.
(From an infectious disease specialist :When the ventilation system on planes is operating, planes have a very high ratio of outside fresh air to recirculated air – about 10 times higher than most commercial buildings.Plus, most planes’ ventilation systems have HEPA filters. These are at least 99.9% effective at removing particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter and more efficient at removing both smaller and larger particles.)
Airlines are trying to make money and to do that they need to pack the planes like they used to. Frontier had a program where for an extra $39 you were guaranteed an empty middle seat, but people didn’t want to pay for that. Another airline (United?) lets you switch to another flight for no charge if the plane is more than 60% full, but that is of course at your inconvenience.
I am not surprised that flights are full as so many have been cancelled and people are now back to traveling. My nephew who is WFH flew to be with his girlfriend, also WFH. Niece flew home for father’s day. My brother went to a business meeting. My daughter went on vacation. Why should the airlines take the financial hit so people can go back to traveling?
