What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

Maine also announced that out-of-state visitors could travel to Maine without the 14 day quarantine if they show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test no more than 72 hours before arriving in Maine. I wonder if NY/CT/NJ will offer that option?

We’d be looking at Seattle-San Diego round trip. He almost always flew Southwest but they now have few or no nonstops, and Alaska has several daily. I looked at a hypothetical trip in early September and the middle seats in coach are x’d out. I don’t know if he’d get someone next to him in first class.

But he’s not ready to travel yet. Haven’t seen him since Thanksgiving. He might prefer to drive but is waiting to see how things go.

Yes, trips are a great way to look at the world!) My parents moved from state to state 10 times) Now they are old, but they do not lose interest in traveling)

As sad as I am about all our cancelled trips, I’m not going to travel for leisure until numbers are trending down in all states. We are considering renting a cabin this Fall in the UP but it will be a last minute decision. We will definitely drive.

But none of this helps if the person/people sitting next to you have Covid. You’re breathing their air with everything it has in it, esp if they don’t have masks on, before it even reaches the filtering system. And you’re doing it for as long as you’re on the flight.

If people are purposely trying to suppress symptoms to fly (as reported in earlier posts), it’s a recipe for disaster for those sitting next to them if they don’t wear masks. The only hope one would have is that person isn’t a “spreader” at all - wouldn’t even have to be a super spreader.

@twoinanddone I understand that airlines are bleeding money. But.

  1. They got a lot of $$ assistance from the federal government to help them. I expect them to use that responsibly to make travelers safe while traveling.
  2. I have reservations on United in August. We were told BY UNITED AIRLINES (and yes, I’m yelling) that middle seats would not be occupied on our two flights. If they have changed that policy, they certainly have not communicated that information to us as customers. It’s a non-stop flight and the only one from our airport each day that is. We can’t really change or we will miss the event we are going to.

I think it’s disgusting that airlines (or anyone else for that matter) would tell customers via email that they have one policy, but then change their minds (which certainly that can do) without informing customers.

And I’ll add…I can’t stand United Airlines for a lot of reasons, and seldom fly them. But they were the only ones offering non-stop to our destination and we made these reservations in December.

^I believe United’s current policy is to inform the passengers if their flights are more than 2/3 full. Passengers will then have the option to change their flights without fees. Not sure how well that works in practice.

My friend was told by United when she made the reservation that she would have the row to herself. Then when she got to LAX they said her row was full. She complained and they were able to move the person in the middle seat at least. Plane was 90% full.

I posted about my horrendous United experience in May. Since then, they’ve updated their policy and will inform you within 48 hours if your flight is more than 2/3 booked. Frankly I don’t know how that helps anyone with set plans because it’s not like their are other last minute options.

I’m just disgusted with United Airlines.

OMG. There. Not Their! Sorry!

Why are people flying anywhere in the middle of a pandemic?!?!

The virus is spreading uncontrollably over most of the country. It’s worse than where we were in mid March when we shut down.

I am so jealous @TatinG got to see bear 399 and her cubs. She is my favorite.

We’ve cancelled two trips this spring/summer, with a third scheduled for the end of July currently hanging by a thread.

My husband is an active duty military physician. Early on in the pandemic the DOD put a hold on nonessential travel. That has eased, but individual military installations continue highly restricted travel regulations, which vary from 100 to 250 miles or more from the base. Travel further than that is not allowed except for work related travel, emergencies, and now for permanent moves. But even moving is restricted to allow for only the move. (As opposed to normal years where personnel could combine a move with a vacation to a third location.)

Anyway, right now we are restricted to a 100 mile radius. There are no guidelines as to how long this restriction will continue. We haven’t cancelled the late July trip yet, but I sincerely doubt it will happen.

I share this as a different perspective on travel considerations.

For as many typos as I make due to not proofreading nor catching things when I do proofread, I certainly don’t worry about reading those others make.

ps It actually makes me feel a little better.

pps If I do anything “official” for school or elsewhere, it gets proofread a ton and often spouse or colleague checked too. I don’t consider a message board worthy of that much attention to detail.

@roycroftmom I can’t believe how famous this bear is. She is old for a grizzly and shocked everyone when she came out of hibernation with four cubs. We were just in the right place at the right time as she crossed the road right in front of us and then walked along the side of the road. She keeps her cubs safe by being around people and therefore away from boars which will kill cubs.

It was a great socially distanced get away. I feel that we have to get back to living our lives, but modified to lower the risk of Covid.

I am thrilled you got to see her. A media star at 24!

How do you know it was that bear?

We will never fly United again. They have screwed us more than once.

@Iglooo She is the only bear in the park with 4 cubs( who were quiet adorable, btw) and she has a certain well known territory in Grand Teton; a territory she has inhabited for years.
