What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

I just flew from Greensboro, NC to Portland OR on American. Full plane, everyone had a mask, but there was no mask enforcement. One guy kept his mask under his nose the entire time, two girls took theirs off for the entire trip. It is uncomfortable, but good gosh it’s not for that long and a small price for health.
I won’t fly fly American again.

I was wanting to visit my family in Ohio. But Ohio has been added to the 14 day quarantine list here. So if I go, I have to self quarantine for two weeks when I get back. I’m not sure how I would be able to do that even though we have extra bedrooms and an extra bathroom. I would not be able to do the PT in prep for my knee surgery.

I guess that trip isn’t going to happen.

I’m not sure where to put this so I’ll put it here since it’s a map. Map = travel.

Click on the number you expect at an event and click the county the event is in and see what the odds are you will come in contact with someone with COVID.

A little annoying that it jumps from 100 people to 500 with no choice in between.

Not saying this is exact science, but for what it’s worth.

Hey, has anyone rented a car lately? Need to help in a move that should fit in a van. Thoughts?

It would be much more helpful if there were choices between 100 and 500! But, still, it’s very interesting, and I have shared it with people.

I rented a car over the July 4th weekend. I wiped down everything I could possibly touch. The first day I drove it I had my windows open and wore a mask. I left it out in the sun after I arrived at my destination and I was comfortable driving it with AC on without a mask wile driving.

If you are renting it for a day, I would just drive it with windows open.

Wiping down a car is simpler than wiping down a hotel room. You don’t touch much in a car, steering wheels, door handles seat belts, …

Why Ohio? What happened there? Ohio did everything right; they shut down early and took time to reopen. So did CA. I don’t understand CA and OH.

@Iglooo Ohio was added because their rate of positive tests exceeded what NY, CT and NJ are allowing.

Ohio has seen a surge in cases in the last couple of weeks. NY, CT and NJ have travelers quarantines for something like 21 states with similar stats.

CA has seen surges in cases as well. Their governor just re-closed places that were opened in their last phase to try to slow down the increased spread.g

If you are flying to any airport in these states, you will be given a form to fill out which asks where you will be doing your quarantine for 14 days. NY is actually fining people who don’t comply with returning the form or quarantine. CT isn’t doing that…yet. Our governor says that will happen only if he doesn’t see voluntary compliance.

Folks driving will be asked to voluntarily self quarantine.

CT, NJ and NY worked very hard to get to the numbers they are at, and do not want to see those increase.

So…if you are traveling to CT, NY or NJ, check that list. If you are from an affected state, plan to quarantine.

Ohio’s governor has also declined to issue a mask mandate for the entire state.

It’s really sad what has happened in OH. Our governor was really strong at the start. Now we’ve opened everything, scared off our State Health Director, and listen to a pleading governor, who is too afraid to mandate anything.

Some of the major urban counties in Ohio are reaching very high rates of cases - including the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati areas. Hugely disappointed that our governor (yes, who was so very proactive early on) has not stepped in and made additional mandates or closings. Instead we just got a “dad lecture” yesterday. :frowning:

I rented a car in May and didn’t do anything to it. I didn’t touch my face and used hand sanitizer the first day. It was fine. I posted back then that the rental counter was a nightmare with no precautions. The car itself was fine.

@MomofWildChild Mind saying which rental company you used??

It was Avis/Budget in Jacksonville. I complained. No mask for the 1 rental counter agent and he was between the 2 plexiglass stations. No Fast Break available. Line was over 30 people long. I’m pretty in the middle with all this stuff, but this was bad. The rental companies have been hit hard and had to lay off a lot of staff. It’s probably better now.

I have rented about 4 times now since the reopening. Except the first time, the counters are prepared, plexiglas, etc. Renting a car is the least worrisome part in my travels. I do wipe down the steering wheel and door handles.

We rented a car from Enterprise last month, getting the Costco discount. They meet everyone outside the building to take care of all the paperwork. That was nice. Our car ended up being a different story.

I leave for Georgia tomorrow. Cases are surging & some counties instituted mask orders. Those just got repealed due to political pressure. I am really worried, to be honest. We will be very careful, but we can’t control the people with whom we will invariably come in contact. We feel comfortable spending time outside at the in laws’ AL, and I am bringing plenty of supplies to clean & sanitize the hotel room. Just the same, H & I will self quarantine when we return.

And I plan to wear a mask EVERYWHERE on trip (other than in the car & hotel room).

@toledo What was up with the car?

It had a really bad smell inside that we hadn’t noticed at pick up and there was no way to exchange it due to the timing of our trip.

Having canceled everything else, I now may have to travel from Virginia to Michigan to oversee my Aunt’s household modifications as her copd has suddenly gotten much worse and a stroke has limited her communication ability. I am her closest relative. I could do the drive straight thru in 10 hrs but would need to make stops. I would need to stay in a hotel at least 5 nights for many reasons. Also need to rent a car since DH needs his to go to post surgery PT. So I am going back over the thread to prepare for it.
