Seems to me people traveling to vacation spots seem to think they are escaping and vacationing from the virus. Sigh. Won’t be heading to our favorite beach anytime soon. I saw the pictures.
Our pool is now opened for residents only. They removed all the tables and chairs so if you want to sit out you must bring your own chair. You have to sign up and only 12 people are allowed at a time. D2 is living with us right now and working from home so she goes out to the pool at lunch time to tan and take a swim. There has never been more than 3 other people there and everyone is keeping their distance so she feels very safe.
Our neighborhood facebook page, which is usually pretty low key, had a huge battle over whether or not to allow guests, especially if it meant there might not be room for residents. They took a poll, which was pretty evenly distributes among the choices they gave. I think there is an “adult swim” time and there are 2 days of “residents only”. They had a sign up for July 4, but no other times. Its first come, first served.
At dinner, H said he asked my thoughts about going to Vienna for Christmas once this was over or safe. Heck, yeah! The kids were on board. We are hoping for 2021 because it doesn’t seem like forever. However, 2022 might be good too. That would be right after a milestone birthday for me, and H would be able to retire then too. He even said we could ask my parents to come. He definitely needs to get back to school and out of the house (even though it scares me). I think he’s going crazy.
We had a similar family discussion a few days ago! I made the promise to arrange the ultimate get-away once this is behind us. Now what could that include… ![]()
My neighborhood has many second homes, my three closest and favorite neighbors are all Canadian. I am sending them photos as their plants flower, it’s sad.
^^^ I am disappointed but not at all surprised.
D was supposed to be in a wedding in a couple of weeks. The event has been cancelled. The couple is still getting married, but they’re doing a small backyard ceremony with immediate family. They are planning on doing a reception next summer. D wasn’t going to fly, since it’s only a couple of hours away from her, so luckily she didn’t loose any money on plane tickets.
I had a trip to Hawaii with my sister planned, but that had to be cancelled and we don’t know exactly when we’re going to go. I don’t want to wear a mask on a long flight (if that’s what will be required). H and I don’t have any big trips planned for this year. We went on two big trips last year. H doesn’t like flying to begin with and he thinks it will be too much of a hassle these days to fly. We may take some smaller driving trips though…
Our city pools just opened but you have to make an appointment online to go in and swim. They are also opening later and closing earlier. H and I don’t really go to the pools in our community much anyway…
One thing I am worried about though is my stepdad. He’s flying up to Seattle to go stay at his lady friend’s home on her private island in the San Juan Islands. It’s really the flights I’m worried about since he’s in his late 80’s and he has a two hour layover on the way back. I’m not so worried about him being on the island since it’s private and it will be only him, his friend, and her son who also has a house on the island and does a lot of the care taking and what not…
I think the only way we’re going to see our son (last time was Thanksgiving) is once my husband recovers enough from surgery and can drive. Then we can drive halfway to Seattle (roughly Redding CA) and meet him and one of us drive the rest of the way back down with him. That way no one has to drive more than about 10 hours alone in
car, and we can mix and max at gas and food stops. We can do the reverse when he has to go back, but he has a lot of saved vacation time and also works entirely from home right now. So he could spend a couple of weeks down here if he wants.
But he has said he doesn’t want to be near us until he can test and know he’s negative. Or has antibodies - he did have a bad case of the presumed but not certified flu in early February.
Sigh.
That’s actually incorrect about Hawaii. They have special rules for college students in HI. “They” will get students tested and they have to be quarantined for 14 days and only engage in college activities until negative results are obtained. Food will be provided.
I’m planning on staying far from college campuses in our state as my understanding is our testing supplies have been cut to 250/day. That’s not nearly enough with many more arrivals/day than that.
Good to know, @HImom. The articles I read simply said the students were exempt, and it was very baffling to me why such a careful state as HI would leave such a loophole for the virus.
Airline travel has been interesting. For now, Southwest is only selling enough seats so the middle seat can be left open. My experience so far is that it is nice. I also flew United recently. They will “do their best” to maintain empty seats, but will not guarantee it. They do hand you a towelette to clean the seat and tray area. On my three flights, there were no many open seats. Passengers were doing a good job of keeping their masks on for the flight.
I am now 3 weeks post travel and no adverse effects. Assess your risk and make the decision on that. The airlines are doing a fair amount to keep you safe. I feel like the risk is the same or less than going to the grocery.
Our town pool reopened with a limit of 500 people as per our state rules on outdoor gatherings. It is a large facility with a lap pool, diving area, slides, a very large main pool and a kiddie area. You have to make a reservation for a 2 to 3 hour block. I have gone twice, getting there right when my time period opened and was able to swim my laps with nobody else near me. I may go tonight, but it would later and I am not sure if I will swim if I have to share a lane or if the other lanes are full, even if I can get one to myself. While the word is that the virus is not spread through water, there is still so much we don’t know.
My plane is empty! I have the entire row to myself. This is how I’d like to travel.
Has anyone seen the article about Barbados allowing folks to work from there for a year?
That’s a very smart move in Barbados. Invite remote workers, why not have an adventure if you know you will be working from home? I would think a lot of young people or families would go. They would have to provide a very reliable Internet infrastructure and the ability to get service hooked up ASAP (which is not the case in a lot of the Caribbean). Definitely brings an infusion of money into the economy.
There may be a data security issue when working outside of US. Some companies do not allow their data to leave the US. They should check with their information security officer first.
During hurricane season???
