What are your tips for getting good grades at Berkeley?

I’ve already heard of the SLC, so I’ll DEFINITELY be using that. If you’ve utilized it, can you elaborate on whether you liked it or not? Helpful?

What are some other ways of succeeding? Group studying? Peer advisors? Office Hours?

What did you use, how did it help, and what did u end up with (and what would u have ended up with grade wise)?

went to the SLC once, the tutors were pretty stupid and the people who went there to learn were pretty stupid (go figure…they couldn’t figure basic stuff out on their own). Learning is slow and dumbed down so I didn’t bother again.

don’t get distracted, there’s a lot of stuff to do. The people that do the best are the one’s who can keep work and play as far away from each other (i.e. don’t watch TV while finishing a lab)

call home every week

don’t do drugs

make lifelong friends

don’t watch a lot of tv

don’t download movies *****!!!

be friendly to everyone

don’t spend too much money  (we know you will)

read right after lecture

go to lecture

don’t go to lecture if it’s webcast

do your homework

eat right

shower everyday

go to RSF

get A’s

be smart

don’t be stupid

use your mind

think a little bit

don’t get mugged

don’t be the stupid kid in discussion or everyone will treat you like the stupid kid

it really hasn’t been that confusing and so far (besides physics 8A :D)…work in = work out

go to office hours = my #1 tip.

however, if you just go without knowing anything beforehand (you will see a lot of these people during the week before Midterms), you’re not going to learn anything. if you actually study the material before you go and ask good questions, you’re going to learn a LOT, beyond the scope of what is covered in lecture. i’ve been really impressed with the quality of GSIs at Berkeley for the most part.

@Mechrocket …yeah I’m definitely not the person to go in before midterms either. I had a college class once and I went to Office hours at least once a week, especially because I heard that your prof. might bump you up in grades if you show that you cared. (can’t think of another word for show that will make sense in this context…sorry i know it’s a bad word to use lol)…but anyways I was pretty sure I failed the final or close to it, and I thought I would get a C or maybe even a D if I did that bad. But ended up with a B-! So I will ALWAYS go to office hours lol I’m the kid who will do the extra credit or anything that helps because I know I will benefit in the end.

@anonymous

lol thank you. I like ur list…very easy to read! : ] I don’t think I’ll do drugs and I HATE TV now but I still download movies lol but at least I only watch it 5-10 mins of the movie every night so it’s less than the average person who watches tv for an hour or more every day! I grew up in a house where everyone constantly watches TV and my friends parents teach their kids that you can read, cook, etc. so I like that a lot better. They’re educated…go figure. I’d like to get somewhere in life so it’s the best decision for me : ]

Also, what is RSF? I’ll try not to get mugged haha I won’t be the one carrying a laptop on my back! : ] Idk if I can shower everyday lol and with the bathrooms being so far from some dorms, I might skip it once in a while lol jk (not really though hah)

Do so many practice problems that no matter what the professor throws at you, every problem will seem like you’ve done it before.

RSF is the gym…

DONT just study all the time

you need balance in your life, or else you will lose your sanity

take shots on the weekend, and do things you will regret

@bagelsbagels: totally agree with you. having some fun, often extreme, from time to time, is the way to go.

oh, get a girlfriend, if you’re a dude, or a girl that’s into that sort of thing. It’s counter-intuitive but having someone to go to during hard times is always nice.

how is the dating scene at berkeley?

Yea, you’ve got to be smart and really scared of failure. That did it for me. The former is a bit presumptuous, but it’s really the only way to explain it. And stay away from girlfriends/boyfriends–there are times during the semester you will need to block yourself out from the world (usually a month for me) which may not be that conducive to relationships.

And get ****faced on the weekends.

kool thanks guys! Every unit has a gym right? Or is there a huge gym for the actual campus?

I think each unit has exercise machines, but not necessarily a weight room. There is a big gym on campus: RSF

Okay, thank you. I don’t use the weight room since I don’t really have proper experience, but I usually go on the treadmill or eclectic machine.

Then you’ll be fine… and I think you mean the elliptical.

Wow. No one’s every corrected me so I always said “eclectic” machine lol although that doesn’t really make sense since there’s nothing else you can do on it and it’s not from “a variety of sources”. lol thanks. That’s what I get for living here. Hah

^this doesn’t take into account carnot efficiency or actual efficiency

anonymouse thinks we operate at zero Kelvin

I think SLC for math 53 and math 54 were quite helpful, they do save me a lot time on reading books and deciphering them.
