What are your "U.S." safety schools?

Mine: Reed and U-Rochester.

I want to add one or two but cannot decide which ones. What about you, guys? My intended major is physics, btw.

Reed is a safety for nobody; GPA + test scores + rank together comprise only 20% of admission criteria. The school’s culture is unique, and fit is important!

Why is US in quotation marks? Are the schools in the US or not?

^LOL yeah…

@vossron: I had no idea. I was researching safety schools and found that my numbers were fairly above Reed’s first year students’ numbers. Can you tell me what Reed looks for? Thanks!

@IAmPos: Cause most of you would mention Canadian universities as safety, if I did not emphasize ‘U.S.’

why do you need a US safety? Why pay more to go to a US safety?

^^ Exactly, my safeties are Mcgill, UBC and the U of S

^^ This thread is not for ‘Why US school?’. We went through that many times previously. When I decided to go to US schools, I meant it. I am not just trying a few top schools but trying safeties as well. <–Please LET’S NOT get into this.

Well, in case you guys have US safety schools, I would love to know.

Wow so you are really set on going to the US then? That is crazy, good for you.

I guess the “lowest” schools I am applying to are Northwestern and U of Chicago, but I wouldn’t consider those safety schools at all, as I probably wont get into either of them haha

Mine is U of Washington - Seattle

Safeties: Wayne State University and Michigan State University.

@ whitney: yea me too, UChicago is not really a safety either, but that’s the school with the highest admission rate that I’m applying to. It’s actually my new dream school though. XD

This article describes what Reed looks for:

[Reed Magazine: Many Apply. Few are Chosen. (1/5)](Reed Magazine: Many Apply. Few are Chosen. (1/5))

@math: How does U of Washington in Seattle appeal to you? Help me out, here, plz.

@viggy: Have you, by any chance, established your residency in the state of Michigan? You earlied to UofMichigan, did you not? I don’t think MSU or UofMichigan offers f/a to CDNs? Just curious…lol

@voss: Thanks!

@prjiki I believe my case is a bit special. I did a summer program at UW - Seattle back in 2008 and had the best summer of my life there. I also became acquainted with a few professors in the department with my prospective major. In short, I will be very happy to attend it.

I don’t have a safety school, sadly. If I don’t get into one of the schools I’m applying to in the US, I’ll probably stay in Canada and try to get into med school in the US (which is nearly impossible, but I know a few who’ve done it)

As someone who applied to US schools from Canada last year, I’m going to tell y’all to DEFINITELY apply to UT Dallas. It’s a good school, up and coming, and I got a full ride there…check out their scholarships; if you have good grades and a good SAT score, you’ll definitely get one. It’s more of an academic-focused school, with about $50 million spent on research last year. It also has great science programs and is one of the best for computer science/engineering.

You should definitely check it out. I think the deadline for scholarships already passed for UT Austin, but that was a safety for me too. I only picked UTD over all the other schools I got into because I got a hefty scholarship from them.

If any of you guys have questions about applying/the process about applying to American schools, feel free to ask me. I went through that not too long ago, and I know that if I had someone to help me it would have gone by a lot easier.
