What can I do about my Math scores?

Hi all,

I just sent in my UC applications today, and feel that my math scores might just kill them. I got a 720 in SAT I, 730 in Math 2 and, let’s say the bare minimum required to pass in 12th.

Is it true UCs don’t look at your 12th grade even if you already have the marks? If not, can I do anything to not look mathematically-challenged?

I can do a stand-by Math 2 for December, but I doubt if there’s enough time to prepare and better that lousy 730.

I was also hoping for a good Math score in Sat I this Nov., but a -3 got 720. :(

Help!

You dont make sense at all. You are freaking bc of SAT Subject Tests, which UCs dont even require anymore. They can only help you.

Now about 12th grade, just dont get Ds or Fs. Then you’re good.

The bare minimum I got WAS a D- which is why I’m not sure… Going through the UCB and UCLA admission stats, all the accepted students had at least a 770 in all Math subjects.

Have you already appeared for your midterm/Finals for class 12?

I think you misread the SAT scores for admitted students, these are from UC site

UC Berkeley freshman admission profile Fall-2011
Averages
High School GPA: 4.14
ACT Composite Score: 30
SAT Critical Reading: 674
SAT Mathematics: 707
SAT Writing: 692

UCLA freshman admission profile Fall-2011
Averages
High School GPA: 4.11
ACT Composite Score: 30
SAT Critical Reading: 657
SAT Mathematics: 701
SAT Writing: 680

Yea, I appeared in March, and have submitted the scores.

By the stats, I meant those in the CC “official decisions” thread. I know CC users are way above the average, but my marks are really deplorable.

Why do you want to take the SAT 2 Math again if UCs don’t look at the scores? Though your SAT 1 Math is a bit low, it’s still above 700 and above the average. Also your composite score is very good. So no need to worry. Those grade 12 marks will probably hurt though. Just try to give them a reasonable explanation for them because the avg. GPA of UC admits is very high and very few of them get Ds.

Also if you still want to take the SAT 2 again, remember that it is much easier than CBSE class 11 and 12 math. So if you just alter your strategy to solving questions you can easily get a great score cos the curve is very generous.

Oh, they do look at SAT II scores.

I want to take Math 2 again to even-out the 12th marks. Even with the explanation for them, I’d rather offer them some concrete proof that I’m up for college-level math.

If only I’d started planning a year ago. This sucks.

Then take it. The curve is super-generous so you can easily get a 800 if you get 3-4 more questions right.

“CC official decisions thread”, in my opinion, represents about 10% of candidates. So if you have applied, keep your fingers crossed. And if you have done anything related to the field you are applying to, since March, include that in your writing and maybe (explain your scores). Or hold on to the explanation if you feel your application is worthy they might ask you to explain your scores.

@canhazphysics- Hey same case here. Even I got very bad score in my 12th Maths… Guess our scores are the same huh…
