I had an actual dream about my kids’ careers when they were very young. In the dream, my son was in the Coast Guard and my daughter was a veterinarian. In real life, it turned out that my son has no interest whatsoever in anything nautical, and my daughter dislikes both science and animals. He is now a software engineer, and she is working for a consulting firm.

Last night, I asked my kids if they could do anything they wanted for a career what would it be.

Ds1: “Get paid to watch baseball and eat food.”
Ds2: “Control a majority of the world’s resources.”

I think I was pretty darn close with my first post!!!

I had a psychic tell my mother that my son would be a “man of the cloth”, religious in some way. Maybe she was confused and picked up on MOWC’s daughter instead :-)

right on the money - Youdon’tsay!!

I would be embarrassed if they became porn stars, even if it was their passion.

I have no problem with porn stars. Just means they got good DNA from their parents ;).

My mom was always convinced I was going to be a professor. She says I have too many interests to ever leave school.

My dad thinks I’ll be president. Don’t they all?

I don’t think I could do anything to embarrass either of them. As long as I’m happy, they’re happy.

Didn’t LongPrime already do that? :)

For both my mentally ill sons - to live independently. That’s it for now. The younger one is looking more promising than the older one, although DS#1 is brilliant.

Someone on here wanted to marry me off to their child a while back but I can’t remember who.

“I would be embarrassed if they became porn stars, even if it was their passion”

Good point. I’m sure there’s a bad joke in that sentence, somewhere.

“Someone on here wanted to marry me off to their child a while back but I can’t remember who”

I was definitely on that list, but I’m sure there were others. If only you could just ditch that boyfriend of yours, it would be hard to set you up with him around!

@MaineLonghorn, hugs to you.

MaineLonghorn - I dearly hope you get your wish.

We have a friend who has a profoundly autistic son. Their hope was for him to be able to live in a group home and it was a happy day when he was able to. I’ll never forget that.

My hope for my kids is for them to be happy and independent. It looks like I’m getting that. I wish they were closer and I could see them more often as I miss them terribly.

Hugs to you MaineLonghorn.

My hope is that my kids can get the educations they desire and find lawful careers they enjoy that pay more than they spend. For quite a few years, we were not sure if they would be able to go on to college, as their health issues made HS attendance VERY irregular and challenging. We are grateful that S graduated from college with honors and has a job that he seems to find interesting so far, which pays him well enough that he is getting significant savings.

D looks like she should be getting her bachelor’s degree in the field of her choice this spring. We are hopeful that she will get a job, but in her chosen field, it is very challenging to get hired (like many artistic fields).

We count our blessings regularly that both kids are having improving health and both have learned to pace themselves and compensate for their limited stamina.

I hope they end up saying yes to career opportunities that take them to places that they can’t even imagine now.

I hope that they find varied ways to apply their skills and knowledge. I cannot imagine doing remotely the same thing for 40+ year career.

I hope they always treat everyone they work with, for and who work for them the way they want to be treated.

And I hope they have partners who have the same sense of adventure.

S1 is in his “dream” career and is very happy…all I could hope for…except for hoping he’ll always be safe…it’s a dangerous job. His glass is always half full.

S2 just grad. college…doesn’t have a dream career…his glass is always half empty…no big aspirations like S1…my dream is for him to find a job that suits him, one that he can be satisfied with and that he can make his own way in life, find love and contentment so that he too will see his glass as half full.

S does have a job where he is valued and in a position of considerable responsibility and a lot of independence. He logged over 80,000 miles so far this year. We hope that in the future his career will also allow him to use more of his engineering skills, as he hopes to. We also hope that his job will allow him to live where he wants, which he says is back in HI.

D hopes to work in a cinema career that will allow her to create & work on interesting projects. We hope it also allows her to live where she would like to–if it brings her back to HI, we would be overjoyed, as that is where she says she ultimately would like to live.

For my D1 it would be awesome should she get a chance at Broadway, hey we are talking dream jobs aren’t we? I would love for her to have a chance to perform first in her career, she is a dance major. After years of enjoying that life and I know she would because there is a passion about her when she performs, she just lights up from the inside out. After that she has plans on opening up her own dance studio and having a focus be on special needs kids. She is minoring in Adaptive Physical Activity. She would like to get a Master’s in that too.

For my S1 - he has special needs - he will just be entering high school this year and is actually quite scared to do so. We are working with him this summer as he transitions to high school. For him I want him to be happy and never have anyone take advantage of him. It is so scary because he trusts and loves just about everyone. He loves working with the custodian at school, buffing floors, which is actually a reward for him when his behavior is good. He says he would like to do that when he grows up and is a man. Eventually I would like to see him in a group home, not sure if Mom can let go of him for quite some time.
But, in reality, most kids will leave home, some sooner than others, so hoping we can find a good place for him when the time is right.

Since it’s a fantasy…my wish for my D is that in 10 years she has created several couture gowns for runway and red carpet events and that she is absolutely thrilled and content living abroad (London, Paris, Milan).

Fantasy is wonderful!

In reality my only hope(s) is that in 10 years my D is content and happy (fulfilled) doing whatever it is she is doing wherever it is she is doing it. The rest is just filler.

I would like my kids to get jobs they love in a place where the living is much easier than NYC because I would like them to have happy, balanced, peaceful lives and I don’t believe that is possible here.
