I want to study international law emphasizing human rights… would I need to take the pre-law route for this? What kind of classes do people like me usually sign up for? Would it be smart for me to double major or minor in something else? Would I be able to handle it? What’s it like at UVA?

I was too focused on getting into college first… now I feel ignorant and don’t know what to do!

UVA does not have a “pre-law” curriculum. Your best bet is to take coursework that will make you read, write and critically think…a LOT.

The history, politics and philosophy departments are all good places to start. There is also a PPL degree (political philosophy, policy and law) which you may find will suit you well. There is also a Political and social thought degree program.

Apparently there is also a new Global Development Studies degree as well – something to think about.

Philosophy is “easy” to add as a second major, usually when paired with something else it only requires like 7 courses.

Generally, it is entirely possible to double major in two Arts and Sciences program. You run into trouble more often when trying to major in programs in different schools (shouldn’t be an issue for you based on your interests).

You could also make your own major. I knew a girl who was pre-med who did “Diseases of Developing Countries” or something to that effect, basically bio and anthropology classes. You have to keep >= 3.4GPA to make your own major, though.
