What Constitutes Literary Merit?

What constitutes literary merit? As I’m trying to hone my decision for books to use on the AP Lit exam that I’ve read this year I’ve been thinking a lot about what kind of books you can use! What really constitutes literary merit? What books fit the parameters?

Classics. Nothing too recent. Something that would be taught in school, like The Great Gatsby or To Kill a Mockingbird. What we read that counted from my Lit class:

  • anything Shakespeare; we read Othello, Titus Andronicus
  • Oedipus Rex
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
  • The Awakening
  • The Scarlet Letter
  • Native Son
  • The Glass Menagerie
  • Frankenstein
  • The Kite Runner counted for some reason, according to my teacher
  • Death of a Salesman
  • Gone with the Wind (for my senior project)
