What course to take?

My son took AP Calculus AB and received a 4 on the exam. He is now going to get 3 credits for Math 141. Should he go right into Calculus II or take a lighter course load his first semester? He’s an Engineering Major.

Thanks for your advice…

Math 141 is a 4 credit course, so I don’t know why your son is only getting 3 credits for it. However, since the engineering program here starts with Math 141, it doesn’t really matter whether your son takes 142 (Calculus II) this fall or later this spring. I must tell you that 142 is a lot harder than 141 and success in that course depends heavily on who teaching it. So it’s up to your son as to what he wants to do.

Thanks again for the reply! One of the advisors suggested that he register for Math 141 then drop the class and audit it in order to be prepared for Math 142 in the Spring. I guess he’s getting 4 credits (is there a 1 credit lab that I didn’t account for?). Who are some good teachers for Math 142?

Thanks again!

There’s no lab in 141 or 142, just a 1 hour recitation where students go over homework problems, take quizzes, and review for exams with TAs. As for good 142 teachers the best by far is Busch but he isn’t teaching the course this semester, Greenblatt is okay. I haven’t heard of any of the other Calculus instructors, so I don’t know what to tell you in that regard.
