What Did You Do Last Night?

Fires in California. Packed belongings into three cars and evacuated our home. Safe with kids 200 miles away.

2020 the year that keeps on giving!!

Fun thread. Why not?

Last night: D2’s last night at home before going back to grad school after a short summer break (her program is year around). Went for a long walk at a local park. Brought home chicken wings and made snap peas as a side which we ate while catching up on Big Brother. Watered my plants, read outside a bit and then we watched the last night of the convention.

Enjoyed a wicked monsoon storm last night, the first this season. It was a doozy with high winds, booming thunder, lightening skipping sideways across the hills and mountaintops, and much-needed torrential rainfall. We even lost power for a couple of hours. We saw a lot of landscape damage and downed trees during our 5AM walk, but it was so unbearably humid, I think we’re done with that exercise for a while. For the next couple of months we are truly prisoners of our house.

@svlab112 Oh, that is terrible and I am sorry. Two years ago, I had to do that and I still have anxiety from the whole situation.

After nearly 24 hours of no electricity, I sat back last night, enjoying the A/C and watched movies.

H and I are empty nesting for a few days while youngest and his wife visit her aging and ailing grandparents (having isolated for 2 weeks prior to going, of course).

We took a walk, did evening chores together, enjoyed dinner and a stand up comedy show (on TV), and generally enjoyed each other’s company doing what used to be normal post Empty Nesting prior to Covid.

On the walk we mused about traveling, wondering when we’ll be able to head out again. Both of us are willing to grab our backpacks, a carryon each, and wander the planet for the rest of our lives - stopping back home occasionally. Before it was “just” money holding us back (and my mom’s cancer decline). We thought we’d have had a few new to us places logged by now - Germany, Poland, and wherever we would have gone for our Anniversary.

It probably doesn’t help that the Smithsonian Channel is showing a lot of Aerial shows right now. So much to see. So little time. And Covid.

We drove to Brooklyn at 7pm last night to pick up D who is going camping in the Adirondacks with a college friend next week. In prep for her trip (and seeing her friend who has been living with her parents) she was Covid-tested (negative) earlier in the week so sat in the back seat with her mask on and window open, just in case. Keeping our distance in the house for the next 24 hours until she leaves. Also swung by S2’s apartment in Queens to pick up a Crazy Creek (camping) chair he had taken from the house and then ordered Chinese food on the way home.

H and I spent the evening watching the DNC convention. We watched all four nights which is something we have not done before. I also started a loaf of sourdough and we did some packing for a camping trip we are hoping to take starting tomorrow. Fires could throw a wrench in our plans.

@mom60 I hope you are able to go on your camping trip. D2 had to cancel her camping trip to Big Sur yesterday and instead headed up your way to camp in the mountains near Santa Barbara.
