What did you do (unintentionally) that embarrassed your child on school tours?

I wore clicky shoes. How could I?! They weren’t heels, just hard soled. They clicked on the info session stairs, the concrete sidewalk between buildings, the tiled floors of the academic buildings, on the linoleum of the dorm hallways, the floor of the cafeteria where we ate lunch. My daughter shot me looks all morning that ranged from exasperated to angry to just so-done-with-you-mom. I have henceforth worn soft soled sneakers and told all my friends to do the same. What have you done?

I was warned when we were getting out of the car that I was NOT allowed to tell anyone where he went to high school. “Mom, I don’t want anyone to know that I went to an expensive boarding school”. He was wearing a hoodie with the name of the school emblazoned across it at the time

We were asked not to ask any questions. DH only asked one. We were on a dorm that clearly had no smoke detectors in the rooms. DH asked, and the embarrassed tour guide noted there were none.

The kid wanted to crawl into a hole!

Our D had the same rule and was equally mortified if we broke the rule and asked something.

We walked too close to the tour guide at the first school, second school we walked too far away.

The third school was where my wife went to school. Her room from freshman year is now the sample room for the tours. So she super excited.

I always walked toward the front of the group and he’d be lagging way behind.

I was on a tight leash but apparently I have a “bad” habit of straying off the paved path and into the grass when the group is bunching up . . . .

Had a bee chasing me in the ending huddle. That darn thing would not leave me alone. My D looked mortified with my darting around. :honeybee:

One time, I laughed at the tour guide’s joke. :grimacing:

Taking too many photos. Befriending people on a tour - AKA distracting them.

How could you possibly laugh - these tours are serious business :rofl:

When the tour guide said “I’m going to be walking backwards” and I replied “the moms will be sure to warn you if you are going to fall”. Oops. The line had been used at EVERY tour (like 15!) and he chuckled. She gently rolled her eyes

When I gave facts on the University of Texas tour that the tour guide did not:

“That was Michael Dell’s dorm when he built his first Dell computer and hid it from his parents”.

“That was where Matthew McConaughey took classes”.

“Renee Zellweger was a cheerleader when I went to UT”.

I walked too closely to the tour guide. Mind you, I was mostly in the middle of the pack or standing to the side.

When my dad took me on college trips in the early '90s, he just couldn’t get his head around the concept of coed bathrooms. He asked about them on every tour.

We toured one LAC where my husband is an alum so he felt very comfortable on campus. He tested the water in the fancy fountain in the science center with his foot. Then he started to chat with some of the stragglers in our large tour group and told them some unfiltered stories about his own college experiences. S24 stayed at the front of the group with the tour guide and pretended not to know his father.

Chose the lunch table of the family with the cute boy. Actually DD wasn’t embarrassed, she was happy. Found out we have a lot of mutual friends. Nothing came of it for DD, but I’m FB friends with the mom anyway

My DH asked a million questions. So many questions where even I was embarrassed! :joy: Like, he sort of treated one Q&A session like it was just him and the presenter and nobody else was there with questions, too. So now the rule for him is 2-3 questions max or else he needs to set up one on one time with an admissions person just for him.

I said in a loud high voice, “Puppy!” when we walked past some students with a dog. :grinning:
