Not particularly. I would still choose Yale over, say, Berkeley or Rice (and maybe even Stanford), but it is now firmly behind HPM.

^ For me, Yale’s behind almost all of my schools. I, on the other hand, would, hands down, choose Stanford over Yale.
This is not a reaction to an ego wound caused by the deferral. The deferral allowed me to research other schools more (because I would have only applied to Princeton and Harvard had I gotten in) and found that I love MIT more than Harvard and Princeton and much more than Yale.
I’m going to put that deferral letter on my dorm room door. It was somewhat of a hidden boon.

Same here, I would have chosen Stanford over any other school. I agree, though, now that I’ve had time to research other schools, I realize that there are so many amazing schools out there. And really, there might be a tiny difference between H/Y/P, but they can all pretty much offer us the same thing.

EDIT: I can already see the arguments forming in your heads :)

I think most of the difference comes from perceptions. People think “Princeton is where the brainy, reserved types go” and “Harvard is where the alpha, busybodies go,” so an alpha busybody goes to Harvard because he thinks there will be more people there like him. Moreover, when he gets there, he thinks “I’m a Harvard man! I should do what Harvard men do and train recklessly to become the world’s best spelunker.” Self-fulfilling prophecy.

@christiansoldier, haha, that’s interesting. I think you’re right. But at any of the schools, there will people who represent all the mindsets, and it’s not like going to Princeton will mean that there will be no “alpha, busybodies.” So there’s not really a difference between the schools, besides how people perceive them.

Unless there’s something very specific like class sizes MUST range from 14-15 people. Or the school MUST have THE best biology department.

I’m going to go to smith because it’s full of crazy feminists(and what’s not to love about that)

I read an essay written by a guy a while back who got a 1590 on the 1600 point SAT scale. He knew it was a good score, a great score, but he still had this incredible sense of loss that he had missed one of his few chances in life to do something, to be someone who accomplishes something deemed “perfect” by a large part of society.

That’s exactly how I would have felt if I didn’t retake… And get it.

I got a 2390 and decided that it was quittin’ time for me
I understand the sense of loss though, but I still don’t think it’s worth it. There are more important things.

this is such a late response but- do colleges really communicate with each other? o.o

GASP IT ALL MAKES SENSE
if you go review the RD decisions thread from last year (HYP in particular) you’ll see that MOST of the people got into one, but not the other two. it’s like- why??
TADA

^You made the right call. That’s exactly the attitude colleges want to see–as is apparent on this board, they’re not looking for kids who rely on test scores to prove their worth (christiansoldier, I’m not saying that was your thinking (I know it wasn’t), but this is how it can come across to admissions offices). There are too many more important things for students to focus on.

Does this mean you guys aren’t writing that you will absolutely, absolutely attend Yale if admitted on your post-deferral update letter (assuming you send one)? I will surely attend in a heartbeat if admitted and am writing that. Will it even help?

Stupefy, I’m telling you, they do an annual draft, and apparently Yale didn’t call either of us.

LBloom - Yesterday I think we had a debate about whether or not Stanford was harder to get into than Yale/other Ivies. And we pretty much agreed with each other all the time.

I’m glad someone understands my not wanting to take it again. Most the other Ivy League hopefuls I know thought I was stupid.

Something that cheers me up whenever I think of being deferred [I think this is something that somebody on the Stanford thread said, actually]:

Yale made a mistake. Hopefully they’ll correct it in March

@Pastel- some people tell your guidance counselor to write that, but I dont see how thats possible considering the midyear report goes to ALL common app schools at once
and idk if I want to do it in my own writing. its just more paperwork that may pi ss them off.

I fear lesbianism…
HAHA totally kidding! I’m such a feminist myself, its not even funny :D

thats sad. its not even sports, and I’m still not getting picked first! Haha

That’s not true. For all you know, Princeton squealed “I WANT HIM!”

^…I’m a GIRL! -.-

“I WANT HER!” then.

bahaha [remind me never to say that again] for some reason that was the funniest thing ever ![]()
I love how it’s close to impossible to tell gender on online forums…
