Graduated from high school in 1972. We had a school uniform of grey skirt and white shirt with collar and a blazer, or you could wear a gym tunic. I detested the uniform and rebelled by wearing tie-dyed t-shirts in very bright colors under my white shirt. After a teacher wrote me up for it, my mother pointed out to the “management” that at least I was wearing underwear and I never heard anything more about it. (As it was, I was swimming laps for detention every Friday for my entire senior year anyway, so all they could have done was add more laps. (It was swim or sit in study hall. I liked swimming.) Long story.) I wore button-down collar shirts that I bought in the boys department, too. (I had nothing to prevent me wearing boys’ clothing.)
At some point they decided we could occasionally wear “civvies.” Those days we all wore jeans and shirts that reflected some sense of style. I, of course, wore my tie-dyed t-shirts. A lot of girls wore Pappagallos, which I didn’t want to waste my money on. I bought most of my clothes at thrift shops and saved my money for the two months I spent in Mexico–working on a dig–after I graduated.
i am short waisted, but I was pretty bosomy, so I liked the leotard tops, because they stayed tucked in, even if my jeans were falling off. I also had a couple jumpsuits, which were great until you had to use the toilet and your sleeve went in.
I wore a lot of dresses, but I also had a forest green woven pantsuit that I wore with a sheer floral shirt. I am not a pantsuit person. Jeans or dresses are more comfortable.
I wish I had been better at sewing, styles were awful in the 70’s.
I remember Peter Max but not the underwear. I liked Glossies by John Kloss. The bras hooked in the front, and they were the first ones that fit me. ( added perk, they drove H crazy when I met him because he had never encountered a front closure before! :D)
I still buy Avalon Organics lemon body lotion. It is very lemony!
I think my mom wore Chanel, Christian Dior or Estée Lauder.
Too heavy, although Chanel #5 wasn’t bad.
I don’t think high school girls wear as much scent now.
But I agree about the Brut. I had a boyfriend who wore the aftershave, & I just loved it.
It smelled a lot better than AXE does!
( my dad wore Old Spice)
The girls at D’s school do, EK! Pretty much anything from Bath & Body Works is popular and boy do they spray it on. But I have D trained-for special occasions she uses her Shalimar.
i have a high school friend that still wears White Shoulders! These scents either made a huge impact on us or there were so few options, we have them all memorized.
White shoulders rings a bell…who made it ? I feel like I may have had it , since I really had a thing for perfume. I also used Anais Anais and Oscar de la Renta, Clinique something or other… Opium ( which didn’t work on me at all, but I loved on others )
Wow. I am seeing lots of brand names of things I lusted for but never got. My mom thought Kmart and Sears and Two Guys (like Kmart) clothes were just fine.
I wanted: Mia clogs, candies heels, real Dr Scholls, Levi’s, Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, Calvin Klein jeans, Jordache jeans, guess jeans, Tretorns, Bermuda bag
I had: chinos in different colors (mom would not allow jeans to school) one fair isle sweater I loved with an Oxford shirt under it, Tough skins jeans, Keds Bo-Bo sneakers, Limited shaker sweater worn backwards for some reason. Parka coat that we called a “snorkel” ??
The other big perfume was Obsession. Very spicy. Enjolie (Bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan!) Of course Loves fresh lemon, and Baby Soft. Breck shampoo, Prell shampoo, Tickle deodorant. Kissing Potion.
OMG, Kissing Potion! Brings back immediate visceral memories. Had completely forgotten about that stuff (and the whole category of sticky, roll on lip gloss.
I remember back in third grade those multi colored (caramel and off white) fake fur winter hats with the long pair of strings adorned wirh a matching pom on each end (to tie under your chin) were all the rage in winter.
My mother wore Charlie. My best friend’s mother wore Air du temps. (I still think of her when I get a whiff of it.)
I was so flat chested I looked great in those bandana halter tops. I had a dress that was made like a tube top with puffed sleeves and a short skirt. All covered with outlined flowers. I wore it last Halloween. I was amazed I could still fit into it. I had to wear it with leggings though it was so short!
I still have a Peter Max beach towel - it was a freebie from the gas station. Remember when gas stations used to give stuff away if you bought enough gas?
Flojos – my preferred shoe
Zoris made of out tatami mats with velvet straps that they sold at the grocery store
Black and white checkerboard slip-on Vans
Doc Martens (big clodhopper ones), worn with dresses
High top Reeboks with velcro closings (maybe later?)
Chuck Taylors (low tops)
White Keds
I’m surprised sseamom. Around here there are so many signs reminding people of those with allergies that scent is usually reserved for a special occasion. I’m not allergic, but I am sensitive, and people often put on too much. Smell should not precede you into a room, or linger after you’ve left.
D can’t smell, and someone gave her DKNY be delicious, which she would squirt on if she thought she was stinky, but I had to tell her that too much perfume was * more * stinky!
I like body creams that are scented like my Weleda skin food, so I don’t wear other scent.( according to this guy that was hitting on me in Santa Barbara a few years ago, it smells like Penhaligon’s Bluebell. He kept arguing with me, like I didn’t know if I put perfume on or not)
I used to like Prescriptives Calyx, and Calvin Klein. ( after high school) but they’ve both been discontinued a long time ago.
I remember when Banana Republic only had catalogs and they looked like a vintage travel guide.
The store in Bellevue Square had a jeep in the window. I still have a safari jacket from back then that I still wear.
Senior year of high school I decided to adopt an arty persona and I wore some pretty weird stuff (though not necessarily to school). My formula was stirrup pants, a white mens Hanes t-shirt, Doc Martens, and some weird fabulous topper. I still have one my all times favorite pieces of clothing from that period, and I just dug it out of my closet, and boy is it weird!
It is a man’s silk smoking jacket from the 40’s, about 5 sizes too big for me even now, with giant shoulder pads, made out of the most fabulous and outlandish print you could imagine. It is a giant print, eggplant, orange, gold, and beige print of giant insects! At first it reads as abstract but then you can see it is 6" insects.
I found it at some vintage store and used to wear it all the time.
I also had a bright blue cotton kimono with graphic Japanese characters (like on a sushi chef’s outfit) but it had these long pieces that hung down from the sleeves. Same formula: stirrup pants, white Hanes men t-shirt, Doc Martens, and the kimono.
Makes me happy thinking of my short-lived weird, arty girl period.
Then, freshman year of college, I discovered the cheap, on-sale t-shirt material mini-dresses from the Limited and figured out that was a much more becoming look and my arty days were over.
PS: i just uploaded a close up of the smoking jacket print as my profile picture. Don’t know if you’ll be able to see it!
I don’t remember Vans or Dr. Martins in HS or even college. We did wear those “construction boots” with dresses, but no-name ones, I think in middle school-72-73. Nottelling, that jacket is kind of cool, if you don’t realize that it’s bugs, lol.
Are you much younger that me? I didn’t know Chuck Taylors were a thing until recently-my D has several pair. H always shakes his head at them. Even at the outlet store they are often more than $50. He says that when he was a kid (60’s) that you cried if you had to wear Chucks because that meant you were poor. He always disliked having to wear them. He wanted to at least be able to get the PF Flyers. So it amuses him both that they’re now wildly popular with girls AND boys AND they are expensive! I wore Keds mostly, but I remember when “running shoes” became a thing late in HS. I had two or three pair with rainbow ribbon down the sides. One pair was white, one blue, and one tan. Cool beans!
@nottelling - I had a great smoking jacket as well! It was a really interesting dark blue and black brocade (also silk) with a black shawl collar. I had a white vintage dinner jacket in addition.
@nottelling I love the colors in that smoking jacket. In the early 80s, I purchased a very expensive (new) yellow, gray, and white cotton skirt and matching sweater with large bugs.
