What do I do? [re: MIT rec letter]

I feel like I am stuck in a bad comedy movie. This would be very funny if it was not happening to me. I did as instructed according to the information in the first email.

Seems pretty straightforward to me. Their preference is if one person is both the teacher rec and the mentor rec, that they complete both. The teacher rec can also serve as the mentor rec, but that’s not ideal since the mentor form has additional questions.

If that is your real name, I suggest that you change it to something more anonymous.

The first email I received stated that I could let the advisor know that they could disregard the recommendation invite in SlideRoom since they already submitted on the main application. This is what I did.

I assumed the form in the slideroom did not have additional questions and was not necessary. If it had important information and not filling it out was unideal why tell me that I could tell my recommender to disregard it and why not mention that it would be better to have them fill it out? Keep in mind the order of the emails.

I am coming from a biased view point, yes, but these two emails read contrary to each other.

Thanks for the suggestion, my username is not my real name.

Yeah, you got slightly different information from probably two different people in the admissions office, at a very busy time. You can either be hyper annoyed and complain-y (real word) about it or you can just ask your recommender to do what they’re asking of you. One of those is more likely to be helpful to you than the other!

Somewhat though the first email does state that the school welcomes the mentor to complete the Slide Room recommendation if they can which reads like a preference but not a requirement.

Perhaps contact your mentor to ask if they’d be willing to fill out any additional sections from the Slide Room recommendation that was not included in the teacher recommendation. To reduce the burden on your mentor, perhaps your mentor can skip redundant sections with a suggestion to refer to their teacher recommendation.
