what do kids do over winter break?

My freshman D will be home for winter break in a few days. I wonder what plans everyone’s kids have for the month (give or take) that they will be home?

Sleep. Lots of sleep. Usually not when everyone else in the house is sleeping.

I have slept probably 7 hours total the last three days because of final papers, so I know I am going to be sleeping for about a week straight. I think I only get two weeks of break this year, so the second week I will probably see friends.

Sleep is always good. I’m taking a week off after finishing finals, but then after Christmas I will start typing all of my notes from this past semester. Also, I am working several days over break to make a little money… Other than that, hanging out ;)

Mine will be working right away. She already told me to add her name to our car insurance.

From our experience with DD1, I would agree with 2boys. Sleep which apparently starts at 4AM and runs to 1 PM. During what we consider NORMAL sleep hours she is IMing her friends around the country.

Sleep past noon, go out to eat, sit around for a few hours, then go out and drink.

My D will be working the fast food job she has held for 2 summers (and last year’s winter break). They gave her a lot of hours last December. She doesn’t work during the semester, but pays a lot of her own expenses - alternative spring break, Model UN trips, club sport costs, etc.

Sleep, sleep, and more sleep. Some recreational reading. Catch-up visits to the doctor, the dentist, the haircut shop. A visit to his high school to plug his college. Lunch with a few old high school friends, and probably considerable time on facebook with his new college pals and girlfriend. And he wants to put up Christmas lights together (joyful happy mom!) and play big-screen Smash Bros.

… Yup, that about sums it up. The month will probably fly by.

Sleep, read, catch up with high school friends, sometimes pick up some free shifts at the old high-school part time job or try to find some temporary holiday work.

Honestly, my college had a reaaaaaallly long winter break (two weeks for the actual holiday break, and then 3-4 weeks for the optional January term where you could or could not be on campus, your choice), and I only made it through 1 full winter break at home. I love my parents, we’re really close, but after a semester of freedom we drove each other crazy after the second week. After that year I’d spend two weeks at home and then all of J-term on campus.

Sleep, spend some time with friends who are home for break. No work(he works enough during the school time). Lots of reading(recreational and research related). Some good wine and Firefly-Serenity and Slings and Arrows marathons with parents(annual tradition). Two weeks will be over and back to the other side of the mountains he flies(sigh).

Sleep and drink, rinse and repeat.

Apply for internships. Shop. Go to doctor and dentist appointments that evil mom insists you make during break.

Also, sleep, watch movies, play video games, talk to college friends by IM and Skype.

My son is going back to work at his summer internship on the 28th and working through the break. That was his choice. We wanted to go on a family vacation. Oh well . . .

Lots of sleep! Ds arrives home on Friday, and has to go back after the first week of January, so he doesn’t have as long a break (~3 weeks) as others have. We will be going out of town for about 5-6 days to see family. His gf is flying in from out of town in January, so I know he will be very busy from then until he goes back to school.

S2 is a champion sleeper and will prob. do a lot of that. His general pattern is to sleep until mid-day, get up and eat, shower, shave and then get on the phone/computer to find out what his friends have planned for the night.

This will be S1’s first Christmas break since graduating from college. He is in the military but will get to come home…yah! He will spend his time working out at the gym, seeing old friends, and making a quick trip to NYC with his old college roommates for New Years.

We have family coming in on the 21st and then we leave on Christmas day to go visit the other side of the family. So there is the obligatory face time with family.

My son will work at the place he worked last summer whenever they need him and get together with friends the rest of the time.

Sleep and hang out with HS friends. I am hoping to get one day to spend with her and shop, go to lunch ,etc. Since she goes to school in NYC and the dorms are open during break, she and 3 friends from HS are going up for a few days.

Jr D2: sleep, socialize, ski and summer program essays.

I am disgusted that my son will probably just be working his tail off over the break. College applications, scholarship applications, and the write-up for his science project (required by his school to graduate) appear likely to keep him busy every minute that he’s not sleeping or eating Christmas dinner. I just want him to have a break.
