What do you buy at Costco?

I wonder if the raw tortillas are a regional thing? We are in So. Calif. in an area with a large Hispanic population.

Are the frames specific for multifocal lenses? I thought that it was only the gradation within the lens itself and not related to the shape of the frame. Why would that be?

No…they just do not offer that service right now. Warby told me that they wouldnt be filling multifocal prescriptions until this summer. So now I just have Costco do the lenses in the Warbys. When they set up their business model, Warby Parker didn’t count on the vast old fart customer pool.

LOL. I guess I misunderstood. You are saying they don’t make the multifocal lenses, but the frames are fine- just have to get the lenses at Costco.

Can I just say… I ordered some rolling closet things from Costco.com and they are excellent! D2 moved into an apartment and didn’t have a closet, so these are basically a closet rod on casters with two shelves below, one above and hooks on each end. Very sturdy and I’m sure we’ll have them forever. About $65 including tax and shipping is free.

Also, we got her a new mattress and box spring at Costco for her room at home. We could have ordered it online (free shipping, as usual) but we needed it ASAP. Her room is now the guest room and everyone who has slept on it loves it. I think it was about $450 for a Queen Sealy set (not sure of the specifics - except that it has sturdy cloth handles all along the sides so you can move it easily). We also got the frame there. Solid steel, made in the US for $39.99. I saw one at Sleepy’s for $200!

Any new Costco discoveries out there? Our is opening NEXT WEEK!!! Whoohoo!!!

Haven’t tried it yet (besides the sample in the store) but a 2-pack of Chinese salad fixings - comes with chicken, dressing, crunchy stuff, etc. - just add your choice of lettuce - thought it would be quick and easy to take to the lake for lunch or a side salad for dinner.

Recently my D and I became addicted to a new flavor of cheese (Lake something) - I think a lot of their cheeses are priced well.

Speaking of cheese, we have always bought the shredded “Mexican” cheese in the refrigerated section - an orange/white blend - it always came in this mega bag. Now, they have switched the mega to 2 separate bags - much easier to handle, still a good price and less likely (in our house) to get tainted and moldy. :)

Kale, cabbage and carrot salad mix. Add TJ’s raspberry dressing (the included poppy seed stuff is too sweet) and some cooked chicken…dinner is served.

We love the Kirkland brand of smoked salmon, the fresh fruit, neutrogena body wash in large dispenser containers, Kirkland moisturizing shampoo and conditioner ( it’s sulfate free and smells great), discount gift certificates to local restaurants, pop crisps, and bathing suits.

In terms of price/quantity, you can’t beat the price for batteries and generic drugs (ranging from generic claritin, etc. to generic lactaid).

They sell large containers of smoked fish salad - salmon as well - branded Blue Hill Bay, which is actually a brand of Acme Smoked Fish of Brooklyn. Really good stuff.

If you have glasses or contacts, they provide excellent contacts and glasses at competitive prices and courteous service. You can bring in your own Arx for filling or see their optometrist. They participate with many insurers for vision and most meds via Rx, with good pricing as well.

Gasoline is at least 15 cents a gallon cheaper for regular gas than most gas stations in our area. My car requires premium gas and it can be 20 cents or more cheaper. Their Kirkland men’s shirts are great - about $18 each. They have white and light blue dress shirts for use with suits and colorful stripes/plaids for business casual/Docker wear - they look great and you would never know they were so inexpensive. Great prices also on contact lens cleaning solutions and beer/liquor.

Our Costco will only do the contacts if you have an exam with their optometrist - I don’t really understand why - we could get eyeglasses with a script but not contacts.

abasket, you may have spoken to the wrong person. I bring in prescriptions for contact lenses all the time and they always fill them.

Our Costco also will fill a glasses Rx from another optometrist. I would try asking again.

We don’t buy much food at Costco…because of the large quantities and many processed foods other than Cheerios and eggs in quantity at Passover time, although we just recently bought a really sweet pineapple there a few weeks ago. We do buy seltzer by the case, tp, paper towels, dishwasher liquid, sponges, bathroom paper cups and assorted things that were good buys… a vacuum cleaner for d’s apartment, a set of tires, Tommy Bahama beach chairs and I did book an Alaskan cruise from Costco.com… very helpful people when I dealt with them over the phone and we got $75 each shipboard credit. In NY Costco does not sell gas but I have heard that in other states, their gas prices are the best. Once in Hawaii we were told that they had the cheapest pricing for Kona coffee around but we instead went to local supermarket and bought some as well when we went on coffee farm tour.

Our D has always gotten her contact lenses from Costco, using Rx from her private optometrist. Never has had a problem. She can even get topic lenses. One year of lenses are about $200. H sometimes gets his contacts from his non-optometrist, sometimes from Costco using his Rx. None of the folks I know who get their contacts from Costco see the Costco optometrist.

Maybe for an initial appointment and contact fitting, I can see requiring you use the in-house optometrist but not otherwise.

They sell Keurg coffee cups cheaper than anywhere else. But even better, they have Kirkland brand that has 100 cups to the box instead of the usual 80 for about the same cost and they were on sale last month. It’s also very good coffee. The best of all the Keurig coffee I’ve tried.

I like dark/bold coffee so get thier box of Newmans keurig coffee there, which is very good. Have found though , that I can get on Amazon, cheaper coffee for the keurig that uses a slightly different gizmo (but worked perfectly fine) made by san francisco coffee company. The price used to be $27 for 80 of them. Now its $29 [San Francisco Bay Coffee OneCup for Keurig K-Cup Brewers, French Roast, 80-Count: Amazon.com: Grocery & Gourmet Food](http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-80-Count/dp/B007TGDXNO/ref=pd_sim_gro_2) still great deal and the coffee is good!

BTW, cotsco’s black and white cookies are yummy!
