Has anyone bought a laptop for college from costco? How did that work out?
I bought my work Dell laptop from Costco 3 years ago. I also used it “for college”
- I took a few classes at the local U. It worked just fine. Now, the darn thing is outdated, but it has Win 7 and is still working… so I’m keeping it.
@scholarme - I’ve bought every laptop we own at Costco. Some “off the shelf” and some custom built. I buy them because of the extended warranty (automatically add a 2nd year) and the support. I’ve used their support and they are great. If they can’t help, or it’s a warranty issue, they act as a middle-man with the manufacturer. It’s nice to feel you have someone “on your side”. Over the years I’ve used their return policy, their extended warranty, and their tech support and been very happy with them all.
Does anyone else find the rotisserie chicken way too salty?
We bought our gazebo there last year and absolutely love it. I also buy the frozen lasagna
Oh yes! We were pleasantly surprised with their frozen lasagna.
Our Costco had awesome portabella mushroom ravioli! I guess we are not going to be low-carbing this week.
Champagne mangoes!
abasket bought a laptop at Costco and did have problems. How did that end up?
We LOVE the frozen lasagna. We regularly buy our milk and coffee (k-cups and Dunkin Donuts) there.
We had a problems also with a laptop-- a Dell came with a broken key. We called dell but quickly discovered we were to all Costco. It all got resolved-- picked up the old one, delivered a new one.
Our Costco laptop story is so involved, I don’t even think I can remember it all!!!
S graduated HS 2010 and was gifted a laptop from Costco, bought in Illinois (we’re in Ohio). It had a ninety day warranty on it. Literally, at day like 92 the hard drive went out. He was 3 hours away. At first we were told they couldn’t do anything. But after securing the receipt from our friends who purchased it and seeing that they bought it with their AmEx card, after many calls and conversations and notes, we were able to get refunded and buy a new one (which actually ended up costing about $100 less so I reimbursed our friends!) This time we put the purchase on our AmEx card
So that was computer two. Computer two lasted three years and then low and behold the screen didn’t crack but developed a disoriented screen in parts of the screen - almost like a bleed - at the moment, I can’t even remember how it happened. Again, son 3 hours away at college, no Costco nearby. Looked up our warranty and again we were just past the AmEx expiration - like within 2 weeks. Put a first call in to AmEx and they weren’t very promising. Called a second time and the operator told me that we were fine because for some reason we had an additional year past 3 on our warranty! Huh?? I questioned her, had her double check, verify - all kinds of things because I couldn’t believe it! I of course asked for something in writing. Well, low and behold I get another call after submitting different info they requested telling me, no we were out of warranty - there is no “4th” year. UGH! Well, of course I was so upset after getting misguided! I remembered that when I talked to the lady who misled me that before we talked the recording played the “this conversation will be recorded for quality assurance” - I mentioned that, they looked it up, they even send me the recorded conversation text and SURE ENOUGH SHE CLEARLY MISLED ME ! So they honored the warranty and reimbursed us the cost of the computer!
We took that $$$ and went to Costco to purchase a THIRD computer (all on the $$ essentially of the first one!). This time Costco had started offering SquareTrade. With Square Trade, you can basically drop your computer on the floor and get reimbursed. We purchased the extended warranty - for a very reasonable price. S took that computer to school for senior year. While doing his student teaching in Chicago second semester he closed his laptop after using it and the corner of his headphones got stuck in one of the corners of the computer. The casing around the screen cracked. Computer still worked, but we were concerned about how this might effect it later. Called SquareTrade, they had us send it in to be evaluated (they overnighted a box to pack it in for free)- called a few days later saying it was not worth fixing and sent us a check.
So, basically he got three computers for the price of one due to Costco’s partnerships with AmEx and SquareTrade. The $$$ from the last one is still in his account - he hasn’t bought a new one to replace the last one yet, but if he does, it will be at Costco!!!
Moral of this story: First computer from Costco (Toshiba) was a dud. While it took a little communication, contacting, etc. we were ultimately treated fairly and they LISTENED.
BTW, I was talking to my cash register person at Costco yesterday about the AmEx changes scheduled to happen 2016 (I believe). She said they will be moving to a VISA card - and she said that the word is that it will be offering more cash back than AmEx.
It will be such a major move (IMO) to move away from AmEx, Costco will have to move heaven and earth to get the new card to be as least as desirable if not more desirable than AmEx.
I’ll be interested to see if personally I keep up using the AmEx card after it’s not Costco affiliated. I don’t know that I’d have one if the two weren’t partners.
I bought a laptop at Costco, I didn’t like it (the computer was fine, just not what I wanted when I brought it home) and returned it and got cash back. I bought another and love it. Really it’s not a problem to buy one and if it doesn’t work, not problem. I got my son’s HP at Costco. It lasted about 2 years, but about as long as the HP I got from the HP website. I can’t blame Costco for that.
abasket - how wonderful if they would move away from AmEx.
The only reason I have an AmEx is to use it at Costco. For everything else, I use Visa and get American Airlines miles.
After thinking and changing our mind, thinking some more, we bit the bullet and ordered kitchen flooring from Costco. It’s been installed a week from tomorrow. I’ll let you know how I like it! Because we put it on the AmEx, we’ll get that cash back too.
We have deck furniture from Costco - fire pit and 4 chairs, dining table with 6 chairs, and 2 chaises. All have held up well. We just wish they sold replacement cushions; we’re tired of brown.
I currently have a Capital One master card and Costco Amex. When they make the change, I’m thinking of ditching my current Capital One card and picking up a plain Amex.
I like Amex, they’ve been very solid. I love how Capital One doesn’t charge transaction fees but they’ve been flaky in other ways (names spelled wrong on cards, sent to wrong addresses, etc.). It will also simplify things to just have one Cap One card.
I already have a Visa card. Will I need to get a Costco Visa card? Or will what I have work. Mine is Chase Sapphire.
They are switching to Capital One.
Costco is switching to Capital One? That is a company I won’t deal with at all! Period. I’ll just pay cash.
