What do you buy at Costco?

I have just heard a rumor that Costco may AT LAST be coming to the Portland, Maine area! And Market Basket!!

I am beyond excited.

^^^ Be careful what you wish for

When I established and online account for my new Citi Visa it gave me an option of setting a spending limit…I thought briefly about setting one on hubby’s card…that tool aisle just sucks the $$ out of his pocket…

Costco…the land of the $250 package of TP.

The Peet’s Major Dickerson’s Blend dark roast beans. Very nice roast. Balanced, not acidic with great flavor. BJ doesn’t carry it and I grind some and use the refillable K-cup on the Keurig at work. Costs me pennies a cup as compared to probaby $.75 to $1 a cup if I buy the disposable K-cups, and I’m not creating more waste this way.

Our Costco was selling Cocola macaroons in the refrigerator case, which I found comparable to the Trader Joe variety and both are too sweet. Now the store has Looka brand macaroons in the freezer case and they are great, similar in taste to the macaroons Starbucks was selling for a limited time but much cheaper.

Went to Costco today- got my usual- a chicken, chips, trail mix, laundry detergent… but, my big score was catching 2 Pokémon while standing in the checkout line. hehehe

Bought 36 macrons for under $20 yesterday for dinner party. Yum!

What are macrons? Macaroons?? Coconut cookie things? Oh, I just scrolled/read up. Discussion was about Coca Cola macaroons. Never heard of Coca Cola macaroons!! Are they good?

This thread provoked me to join and today I went to a COSCO that recently opened not too far from my home. I found customer service lacking in the enrollment line and it was very disorganized. Took me about a half hour to get everything accomplished including the pic for the ID. But I am willing to attribute that to the fact that it is a new store.

I bought organic blueberries and strawberries, raw cashews, organic chicken breasts and a huge box of Special K cereal. Lots of Smart Water for my son and a couple of cases of Pellegrino for myself. Organic milk and laundry detergent. Paper towels, toilet paper, dishwashing detergent and trash bags.

Am throwing a BBQ the weekend after next and will definitely go back for more organic chicken. The whole filets of beef looked interesting and were very well priced. So if I can convince them to trim one a little more for me I will go back for one for the BBQ.

There was not much in the way of the flowers that other posters had recommended, just a few bouquets in water buckets that looked to be grocery store quality. Maybe they will get a better selection as time goes on

It’s definitely a “bare bones” shopping experience but for the items I purchased there was a significant savings.

Macarons. Different than macaroons (coconut based).

What are they?

"French cookies made with almond and egg whites that are sandwiched around a cream-based filling. They come in a rainbow of colors and flavors:

They look sort of like a sandwich cookie. Colorful, delicious fillings!

I googled them. I recognize them. French thingys. Your description is much better @abasket

I noticed macarons a few years back as there seemed to be another macaron shop popping up on every second street in NYC. Then saw them at Costco a year or more ago, and wondered how the Costco ones could possibly compare. I am a VERY loyal Costco shopper but there are just some things they should not try!

I just bought 2 tires yesterday. I always buy my tires there. Free balance and rotation for the tires as long as they last. More amazing- I wasted an hour and a half inthe store, ate my way through the samples and only bought a package of raspberries. Oh, and a fat free cup of chocolate soft serve ice cream.

The Costco ones come from artisan bakeries, sourced closer to the warehouse. The ones in my local Costco are made by a small bakery in SF. I forgot the brand.

@BunsenBurner – I am guessing there are regional differences in the products carried.

I bought sushi from the case once and it was terrible. I conduct my weekly (or more frequent) grocery shopping there, but the one thing our Costco cannot do correctly is prepared foods.

@jym626 --excellent price on tires as long as they stock the ones you need.

Costco’s sushi is not good. Sashimi, OTOH, was excellent - with one caveat: only in HI Costcos.

Bought a gorgeous light turquoise cabinet there this week. Heavier than heck to get from the van to the house. Looks great and well constructed. I’ve been looking at cabinets from the same brand for over a year. Walked in Costco, H and I did a double-take as this was new to my store, saw the price, looked for a sales guy to lift it on a cart, and we were out in ten minutes.

@psychmomma – I saw that cabinet there yesterday along with all the other furniture and was wondering why the furniture was all back in July. It usually moves in immediately after Christmas and lingers through January. I was trying to decide if they were targeting the post-college market, but our area is not a rental area for college grads, so I am stumped.
