You find a friend who works on a high floor of a building with a good view of the fireworks and have an illicit drunken fireworks party in his office.

Well, that’s what people did when I was young and lived in the NYC area.

One year we booked a boat cruise and the boat went out into the Harbor for a great view of the fireworks. They close the major roadway that runs alongside the river and it becomes a pedestrian mall for watching the incredible fireworks. Or, you do what Marian suggests. ;)

NYC fireworks are amazing and last 45+ minutes from multiple barges in the river. (that said, we’re usually at the beach and go to Asbury Park’s show, which lasts 10-15 minutes)

You can go to the Coney island hot dog eating contest. I actually like to watch the fire works from Jersey across the river with the city as the back drop. So pretty.

You need to approach it as an adventure. The best viewing areas for the fireworks are usually very crowded and transportation can be…difficult and congested. That said, NYC puts on a tremendous display usually coordinated to music, that lasts a long time and usually premiers the “newest” in pyrotechnics.

You go out to an early dinner or bring a picnic; walk over to the West Side Highway early and find seats (best to have jackets to sit on). NYC fireworks are some of the best anywhere.

NYC son and daughter-in-law scheduled their wedding on July 4 so he’d always remember their anniversary, she’d always have off of work, and there’d always be fireworks.
