ok this question on the NYU app is driving me CRAZY and i dont know what i should write…i know they want creativity, but how??
anyone have any advice?

just write about what you normally do on sunday afternoons?

haha. thats for YOU to decide.

Are they looking for something significant?

I’m not sure about the “significance” of what I plan on writing… Would anyone be willing to tell me what you think if I PM you (I don’t have it written, I just want to know if my general idea falls in like with what they are looking or)?

I don’t think that NYU is “looking” for anything. I think they just genuinely want to know what you did last Sunday afternoon or the Sunday before that or the Sunday before that. I attended an information session where they talked about that question and the admissions officer who spoke there said that you can tell alot about a person from how they spend their Sunday afternoons.

I don’t think they necessarily want you to say that last Sunday afternoon you found the cure for cancer, I think they just want you to tell them what you did - not the “I woke up and then took a shower and then had eggs for breakfast” thing, though.

With that said, if you feel like you want to portray yourself in a certain way, then maybe you could pick a Sunday (any Sunday) where you did something that truly reflects you and how you want the world to see you, and write about that.

Well, to be honest, I was most worried about my response because I planned on being perfectly honest. I’m afraid it might be bland, but it communicates who I am, and I doubt that many people will say the same thing… I’m not sure… I guess I’ll just post it here… Can you tell me what you think?

I’m a huge football fan, and I basically spend all Sunday watching just about every football game (through box scores or actually on TV). I’m applying for Cinema Studies, so I plan on saying that my taste for sports (as a fan) comes from the same analytical mindset that drives my passion for film in that I want to break apart each facet of the game and see how it contributes to the whole.

I did the ‘I watched some football with my dad’ thing. It’s being honest and down-to-earth… and I put that I have a big family dinner (because I do). Just put what really happens on Sunday for you even if it may seem ‘boring’

Well, I also doubt that many people will say the same thing. Most people will probably be analyzing the question too much to put a truly honest answer, and I think that NYU will really appreciate your honesty.

The only problem you may run into is the length. I know the question asks what you did, but I’m not sure that you should include why you do/did it unless you can truly explain it in a few words. If you can’t, you can always use the second part to answer the question about what led you to select your anticipated program at NYU - that may be a way to really tie your application together and show your uniqueness.

However, that is just my suggestion. Other than that, I say go for it. Like I said, it’s honest, and I really, really think that they will see the honesty and appreciate it.

Yep, I liked it. I had the opposite problem actually. I did something kinda unique two Sundays ago and I couldn’t not write about it because it really tied in with my whole theme of my application…however, Im afraid they would think I made it up. Oh, well. It is all sent already.
Best of luck to you.

I wrote truthfully about volunteering at the animal shelter because that is what i do on sundays from 2-5:30 pm.

Hmm, I wrote about some family event (Christmas shopping, and other Christmas traditions) that I actually did do last Sunday.

i think that the most important thing is to emphasize your most unique or promising qualities. sure, honesty is important but there is not much of a difference between what you have actually done and something that you haven’t done but would really find yourself doing, especially when it comes to applications. the admissions officer won’t know if it’s true or not, and if it’s true to your personality, then even if it isn’t true it doesn’t matter. it’s still you. you want to stand out, and sometimes being completely honest won’t do that for you.

I’m writing that I went for a run and watched a movie with my friends. It’s boring but maybe they’ll like the fact that I have friends? Or watch movies.

Because the majority of people dont have friends? Or watch movies?

haha.

i spent the past week pondering this between classes. darn question

The problem for me is that the space is too short. There’s so much that can be revealed about myself on a Sunday afternoon. How are you supposed to comprehensively answer that question in 5 sentences??? Agh…I’m gonna lose my sanity, I swear.

If you have a passion, just write that you pursue that. That’s what i think they were getting at.

Oh! I remember this question, it was something about what you did last Sunday afternoon or the Sunday before that, etc.

I clearly remember writing about going to work (I work as a clerk at a gas station) and asking my boss to let me off work a little bit early. Since the gas station has a mini-mart and also has three garages/bays. I decided to get on top of one of the car lifts (they go about 6-8 feet in the air) and do a photography shoot of a bird’s eye view for class.

I got in ED for Tisch and I just wrote about how I went to lunch with my dad, finished up some homework and went to a football game to film. Das Ende!

Thank you. What if my sunday afternoons aren’t particularily eventful? The host family I live with doesn’t really provide transportation anywhere. They’re religious too so it’s sacriligeous to go out on sundays.
