I have a small wallet that I keep in my purse. But I don’t always carry my purse because my IPhone has everything I usually need –driver’s license/state ID, 2 different ApplePay credit cards, metro card, auto insurance card, car keys and house key.
My wallet has a debit card, 2 credit cards, DL, health insurance card, US passport card, a few $20 bills and some stamps. No keys.
I will always have to have a purse because I need reading glasses! Unless I decide to wear my progressive glasses more often. But most days I wear contacts and so need the readers.
Typically no purse or wallet doing errands within a few mile of home. Just cellphone and car keys. (In theory I can use my cellphone for car key, but it’s not as reliable as I’d like.) I can use ApplePay at my grocery store and most other places. When I go further, I either have my neck wallet (with real license, credit card, some cash). Or the neck wallet tucked into a purse if there are more items I’m bringing (paperwork for an appt, book for a friend, container for restaurant to-go).
My phone is in a case like the one in this thread and has spots for a few cards—my Costco CCard, plus a few more.
On my phone, I have an app with my library card. Have my driver’s license on my phone in apple wallet—it’s a real digital ID accepted in our state and good enough for banks to cash large checks (which is a good thing since I lost my license and will get a replacement later this month).
I carry my purse (or sometimes H will carry it for me) because it holds some cash (there are places around here that charge surcharge for CCards and I’m cheap) plus it holds my sanitizer, mask and handicapped placard as well as my medicare & insurance cards & my keys. Yes, I can get by with no purse but have to think about what I need to bring that’s in there. The handicap placard has been handy for me with my chronic health issues and H as he’s dealing with treatment effects of cancer therapy. The placard is a long & awkward shape. I also have spare charger for phone and cable plus an oximeter in my purse. If I’m expecting I may be cold, I tuck a light sweater into purse too.
Thanks everybody for all the discussion! I do carry my purse most places and not gonna give that up. I have 4 pairs of glasses in there for different needs – prescription sunglasses for driving and general wear outside, distance vision glasses for driving at night, two different strength readers for when I volunteer at the library. Ninety percent of the time I don’t need to wear any glasses, especially indoors, but I need them handy when I do need them. Also like to have things like lip balm, lotion, etc, etc. So not giving up the purse, but I think I can definitely pare down on the wallet. I just got a new case for my phone with the magnetic charging so I don’t think I will switch that up, but I really only use about 6 cards (drivers license, 1 credit card, debit card, insurance card, FSA card, Costco card). I do use cash some, too. I probably have 15 cards in my wallet right now.
I have posted these on CC before. I use these in my purse and other places. I have purchased them for stocking stuffers for all my female “kids”. They truly look nice, are the perfect size for cards - credit, gift, membership cards. They are inexpensive! I have had mine for probably 5 years and they look good as new.
I use a purse (slings around my shoulder) and in it is a little zip wallet/pouch that has another piece in it for a few credit cards, my license, and medical cards. Also in the pouch is cash as I like cash and never ever use the debit card (so try to pay cash for anything under $10).
Because of this thread, I looked at it today and thought “It looks really fat.” That’s because there were 13 $1 bills, 5-6 $5s, and a $10. All were folded in half, so double thick. I took the $1 bills out as I’m going to Mexico in Feb and like to have them for tips. Back to a slim wallet.
I always put my wallet in my left back pocket. I have a couple of pairs of shorts that only has a rear pocket on the right. Totally feels off when I wear those.
I still carry a purse with wallet, keys and sunglasses along with lip balm, and a brush. These days masks as well. My key ring has the house keys and car keys, along with my gym card. We don’t have a keyless entry on the door, but I think I would still want a key with me in the case of a power outage or if the keyless didn’t work.
I have a smallish wallet that can go into my purse or even my belt pack. When I go to the City or travel, I use a belt pack that can double as a sling purse. Otherwise, I use a backpack purse or a small crossover. Backpack purse has a side pocket for a water bottle.
We always use our garage door to get into the house. But… I do keep a house key in the glove box just in case. Someday would like to have keyless system but also worry about power outages etc, even though we are not as prone to them (buried power lines) as we were in a older neighborhood in NY. Ha, topic for another thread.
It is generally advised to keep the door between the garage and house locked as if it were an outside door to the house.
There are door combination locks which are battery powered by a 9V or similar battery in the inside part of the lock, so they do not depend on house electrical power to be on.
We had the key to my folks’ house on a lanyard in my car. My car was broken into and they stole the key but it had no info on what address it corresponded either, so no harm done. It would make me not want to keep a key to my home in my car. I have a spare key with the neighbor across the street (they’re nearly always home) and one securely hidden around our home.
Keeping a key hidden somewhere IN the garage is a good compromise. Then I feel if a neighbor or family member needs to get in the house all they need from you is the garage door opener code.
All this wallet talk has me thinking about ordering this wristlet - I really think it would do the “wallet” trick for me:
After having my wallet stolen out of my purse (hanging on my shoulder) last weekend while grocery shopping, I’m now trying to figure out what I really need to carry with me going forward. I had that wallet for a long time and can’t even remember everything that was in it, but definitely way too much–two major credit cards, a debit card, two gas station cards, a Macy’s card (I think), my DL, health insurance cards, AAA card, multiple library cards and cash (including change). I’m really not sure exactly what else was in there. Since I do have one credit card and my debit card on Apple Pay, I may just carry my phone most of the time, but I’m so used to carrying a purse, I’m sure I’ll constantly feel like I’ve forgotten something.
During covid we would drive out to the desert and spontaneously just start hiking on a trail. It was a pain to carry my purse, no matter how small, it still was a nuisance to lug it around. I didn’t want to leave it in the trunk of the car. So I started to rethink my billfold issues. I am happy with the card holder I have and my phone.
