Since I generally don’t give a rats patootie about what others would have a problem with (when they’re paying my bills, they can give their opinion) here’s the things that my middle class upbringing gives me slight twinges about (not that it stops me!)

Concert tickets: I’ve just spent a silly amount this month for one local show for all 4 of us, and for one festival for D2 & 1 in May. I anticipate a few other shows this year as I’m expecting another Springsteen tour. I didn’t get to follow any bands when I was younger because I was blue collar and working but dang it, I will get into the pit at a Springsteen show one day!
Haircare costs (cut & color with highlights every 7 weeks with an amazing hairdresser who makes me laugh)
Dansko & Merrill shoes (no more cheapos for me given my familiarity with the orthopedist)
Twice a month house cleaner
my Ragdoll cat (all others I’ve owned have been rescues)
Books and magazines

And I’m going to buy Yukon Gold potatoes this week :)

Insanely jealous of the Tesla. My dream splurge is buying a new Audi from the factory. We’ll be in Germany in the fall, but there won’t be a new car following us home.

I only buy Viva paper towels. I loathe anything else. #1D bought a multi roll pack of another brand in error and we had to work our way through them. I don’t think I’ve ever used so many paper towels so fast. #2D wouldn’t even take some to her apartment. The girls’ friends used to be in awe of the Viva for regular use. Yes. I am a paper towel snob.

OK, Mr B is the idiot number 75**. I cannot believe there are almost 8 thousand folks willing to buy something that still could turn out to be vaporware! He is already talking about wiring the charger for it!

There’s a little store about a mile from my house that sells spices. Exclusively. Just spices. I need some saffron for a new recipe, and the plain vanilla grocery store didn’t have it, so I went to the spice store. Oh my – what a delightful little shop!! I’m hooked – no more McCormick spices for me!

Very Happy—Did you just discover Penzey’s? I don’t know if it is a splurge. I started out years ago buying everything in the glass jars and then being frugal, realized that I could buy the plastic bags for any spice I used in large volume. The prices of the plastic bags are much lower than grocery store prices, and the larger quantities kept me from having to trek back to Penzey’s. Sesame seeds are SO much less expensive there. They will suggest storing chili powders in the freezer to prolong their life. LOVE that shop.

RE: All the Tesla buyers out there……first, who knew there were so many? I love that car in navy–such a ‘pretty’ profile. I must have kept seeing the same two or three navy sedans this summer but haven’t seen them much this winter. Is there a reason to drive the car less during the winter? And I have never seen bright yellow—just navy and one red one. None of my friends own it but I have been wondering if it is only purchased as a third or fourth car b/c of its limited range.

@BunsenBurner, even if Mr. decides not to buy it, the deposit is fully refundable. Additionally, he could sell his place on line for more than his deposit if the vehicle is popular enough. Between my deposit and his, 1500 more people were willing to make a deposit even without seeing or driving the car – heck, we don’t yet know all the stats for it.

@ct1417, I guess it depends on where you live. It has better traction than the typical RWD car, but it is not 4WD. Eta: YET!

The range is limited but there are more charging stations opening up, and I very seldom drive > 250-300 miles in one trip (the expected range). My typical day is 20-100 miles, easily handled by the batteries.

S is getting married this year. Wants to purchase a splurge item for me before the wedding. Would welcome any suggestion.
Tesla is too low on the ground for me.

Thanks, BB. I hope I can make good use of the treadmill!

We have an electric Leaf and a charger in the garage. I like the car (H’s car) but it does give me “range anxiety.” We had a close call on the very cold Christmas Eve. I drive a gas vehicle and ah kept his 2003 Subaru for longer trips he needs to take.

Ct1417, Mr plans to use it as his primary car. He wants to pick up the car at the factory (so he can get a tour) and drive it back. Even today, there are enough supercharging stations along the I-5 corridor that this can be easily accomplished. And thank god it does not come in yellow! Silver will be the color - because I said so. There are 2 lines for the model X - the priority line required $40K deposit and has about a thousand idiots in it.

Our son is also getting married this year. This is also a special birthday and anniversary year for me/us. I am looking for a VERY special piece of jewelry and a special trip to Europe with only the original 5. (We could bring another 3…but cost aside…I want the original us. We tend to have fits of family laughter, which I suspect and know that can be a challenge to others at the table.)

And when our boys were younger we would splurge on taking sports game vacations…buying tickets and getting on airplanes to see teams play football or baseball.

Mostly stuff that the boys and our family have enjoyed: pool & table tennis tables and large screen tv

And a few pieces of jewelry. Not too many splurges!

I just buy my spices at Costco! (I go through them quickly)

A splurge for kids getting married who want to treat you would be a spa weekend? Massages, facials? A cruise?

bevhills, we did the exact same thing last year. Went to Europe with 5 of us including SIL to celebrate a special BD for me. After the kids went back to work, H and I spent another week in Paris. It’s rare that they could all take time off from work at the same time.
Have fun in Europe, it’s so special to take a last vacation with your original 5.

ETA:I assume your future DIL is not going. How did you invite/not invite her?

bevhills—was that an invitation for jewelry suggestions? The shopping antenna went up!

chocchipcookie—I buy an awful lot at Costco (more than $10K/year, if I trust my year-end Am Ex statement that just arrived), but I haven’t bought spices there.
