I remember back when it came out in 2015 it was so long since they had anything with space travel on TV, “Battlestar Galactica” ended in 2009 and I thought people were itching for another space adventure and would flock to one if the TV show producers made one. I thought “The Expanse” would get at least 8 million viewers. In reality no more than 1 million viewers watched it throughout it’s run on Syfy from 2015-2018.
Even shows like “Agents of Shield” has at least 3 times as many viewers. Is hard core sci fi simply too weird? Has comic book TV make sci fi fans childish in their taste? Do sci fi fans prefer more lighthearted and fun adventures?
Did Game of Thrones simply suck out all the hot air in the room?
Would something like this have appealed more to the mainstream?
The Expanse is my favorite streaming series - by far. I binge watched the first four seasons over the space of 2020 and was blown away by the script, the acting and the special effects. Btw, I was very sorry to see David Strathairn leave the cast after making such a splashy contribution to the show’s trajectory. But, maybe they can bring him back on some pretext or other. Loving the Baltimore connection - what a genius backstory for my favorite character.
I love sci-fi but had never heard of the Expanse. Thanks for the recommendation, it looks amazing. Not a fan of Agents of Shield…maybe a little tired of the marvel verse . Haven’t watched for all mankind yet.
I loved the Expanse in the first season or two and then somehow lost track of it. Thanks for reminding me, I’m gonna binge on it now whenever I have some time!
I love The Expanse! Binged the first four seasons In a week earlier this year when I was home sick with the flu and have really been enjoying Season 5. Was pleasantly surprised to learn the books that the series was based on were co-written by Daniel Abraham whose books I’ve also enjoyed greatly.
I also was a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica (it was one of my all time favorite shows) and am not interested in watching Agents of Shield either.
I highly recommend Firefly, if you haven’t watched that yet. As well as Orphan Black (not quite the same kind of sci-fi show but the lead actress is amazing).
