What do you use for extra bed for visitors?

We have an Ikea futon sofa (queen), bought when we converted S1’s room to my craft room (but wanted him to have a place to sleep when visiting). It’s now in S2’s room, and he and DIL just slept there for five weeks. No complaints, but Ukrainian beds aren’t super comfortable, so it was probably better than what they are used to. I considered looking at getting a mattress topper, but where does one store a 3-4" topper when it won’t fold back into the bed?!

We’re looking at replacing our mattress (agh, what a depressing and discouraging undertaking) and will then put our current mattress on a frame in S2’s room so that whoever comes to visit has someplace more comfortable to sleep.

There’s an unofficial bedroom in the basement (no windows) that has a twin. The futon will probably go downstairs when we switch mattresses, though that will require reconfiguration in the basement since there’s a lot of stuff that needs to be sorted/donated and both guys have stuff stored here.

Try IKEA! My full-size mattresses, both of them, were less than $300 each and one is at least 8 or 9 years old. As I said above, at that price if they wear out, they can be replaced for another $300.

Tagging on to @oldmom4896 post: We also have an IKEA spring mattress at home. I assumed it would be temporary, but it has worked fine for us for over 6 years so far. I like firm. DH likes things softer than I, so we purchased a 1" memory foam topper, and it works fine for both of us.

My older S has an Ikea mattress in his guest room (use to be his before he and GF got a king), and it is so darned comfy. IIRC, it was about $800. That was the first place I looked. Unfortunately, Ikea no longer makes it! May be worth dragging H to Ikea to check out the other mattresses, though. If we buy a new one for $300 every few years, that’s less than what we’d spend for the purportedly good mattresses, though I don’t love filling landfills.

We got a highly-rated online mattress during Covid after H ordered a twin of the same model for the basement during his months of early Covid exile. He really liked the twin, but the queen has not held up well.

My IKEA mattresses are double size, thus considerably cheaper! Both firm innerspring and, as I said, I have the first one for many years, maybe 10 now that I think of it. Of course it’s just me sleeping on it.

We bought the cheapest inner spring mattress from the local bed shop for the spare room. It was very hard so purchased a natural latex topper ($100-$200 for a Q) and people rave about it so apparently it’s very comfortable! I do like the natural latex toppers, they don’t seem to heat up as much as the foam ones do.

We had a latex topper. Trying to go green after years of memory foam. Could not stand it. We gave it to a friend who also hated it. Who gave it to one of their children who also did not like it. And yet many folks rave about it. It appears to be one of those things that either you love or hate.

Second the recommendations for Aerobeds. We inherited 3 of them when we bought our vacation house. They have really come in handy and no one has complained about sleeping on them.
