I always have trouble in that in between weather. I’m talking more just hanging around the house, not going out…but you are inside and outside. That weather where it’s cool in the shade, warm in the sun…not humid. I really don’t like jeans just lounging around, but shorts can get too chilly. Sweats are just too hot still. Argh! I need something this weekend visiting friends where it will be in the low 70’s all weekend. I want it to be fashionable but really comfortable.
I never wear jeans or shorts. There are all kinds of cotton, jersey type knit, or linen pants out there. Something with a more open legged or loose fit is comfortable, less binding, and cooler.
Look for a pair of linen pants! They tend to be light and breathable. (Eileen Fisher, J.Jill type styling if you like that is comfy yet neat.) I like Capri length pants in this season.
Check out the pants (not leggings) at Athleta. They have a lot of great styles for what you’re looking for.
70s? 70s?? Shorts! People in Maine wear shorts until the daytime high goes below 60, ha.
Capris?
A long flowy dress. Like these:
Many choices.
Shorts.
I have brothers who wear shorts until there is snow on the ground…and often after that. I have one brother who wears shorts until he has to put on his uniform - ski pants. We joke that it must be below zero before he wears a long sleeved shirt under his patrol coat.
My kids wore skorts as a school uniform year round and the boys argued that it wasn’t fair because they couldn’t wear shorts until the spring quarter. For once the girls won because is no arguing with nuns.
I have one pair of light cotton pants I wear during in between weather. Mostly I wear capris. I like VeryHappy’s dresses, but they aren’t practical for my job! Great choice for weekends though. A couple of years ago Jordan I wore a lot of longer skirts which were great for cool nights and hot days and were modest. The broomstick skirt was great - easy to walk around in, and wrinkles aren’t a worry.
Lightweight pants. Jeans are too hot.
I have both a white pair and a black pair of adorable capris which flare at the bottom which have cut outs. I love, love, love them. They are a rayon blend w/Lycra so snug fitting and never bag out - but don’t look like leggings. I wear them everywhere.
There is a newish boutique in my town and the owner is also a designer and I think these pants are hers. Here is a pic.

Thanks all. I love long dresses, but this will be very casual. Chilly in the morning, warming thru the day. I think I will run and search for linen pants. Preferably with elastic waist. I think that’s the comfy yet chic look I’m going for.
A maxi desss! That is quite casual.
@MaineLonghorn - people in Seattle wear shorts year round. With thick wool socks for warmth. Low 60 is scorching heat by the local standards!
@emilybee - love those capris. And I am not a fan of capris in general.
Nothing to stop you from taking a second something, to change into if it gets warmer or cooler.
But MaineLonghorn, I’d bet there are plenty in Maine who wear shorts well below 60. A couple of hours south of you, we see them in the 40s.
Well, that’s true. My kids insist on wearing shorts in the winter and long pants in the summer!
This is kind of what I would wear:
With a long linen open front cardigan by Eileen Fisher.
I too am in shorts well into fall. From there I go to cropped leggings. When I start wearing jeans is MUST be downright cold!
capri leggings with a linen tunic top?
Shorts here, too. Just add a sweater or sweatshirt or jacket if it cools off. As long as my torso is warm, a little chill on my legs doesn’t bother me.
