What about when they refer to you as “dear,” or “honey?”

A. Parents, or people close to you that use terms of endearment.

B. Peer who might be interested in you.

C. Crazy.

Side note on point A - Girls often use the term with their friends.

i huge my friends usually when i havent seen them for a while…or if we’re meeting up outside of school i hug everyone…

I hug everybody. All the time.
I don’t have to be interested in someone to hug him/her.
And I don’t think I’m crazy.

Hugs are good!

It’s not really who you hug, more how you hug em

girls hug dudes all the time. its semi-flirting

It depends on the situation:
A. You haven’t seen someone in a long time and you’re happy to see him/her
B. You’re at a semi-formal dance and all the girls walk around hugging each other, even the girls they hate, saying “OMGILOVEYOURDRESSILOVEYOURHAIRYOURESOGORGEOUSOMG”
C. You had a very good or very bad day and needed a hug

Personally, I’m not a huggable person. At all. I flinch when someone tries to give me a hug, ESPECIALLY when it’s unexpected (i.e. you meet someone, go in for a handshake, and they give you a great big bear hug).

I may be biased though… I feel like hugging is just the norm here. My school is known for it:

they want to have your babies

I think that it’s normal.

^^Thanks for the link. The elaboration of the various types of hugs was intriguing.

Despite the fact that I’m not going to hug another dude, I don’t see anything sexual about it. I hug female friends sometimes.

And it doesn’t make you feel slutty?

^Why would that be slutty?

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not.

Yeah, it was a joke. Most of the people I know that hug a lot are actually the opposite of slutty, if such a thing exists.

Slutty? Weird question.

I tend to act rather effeminately I guess…

It would make sense if the genders were reversed, thus revealing the underlying double standard.

Friends hug each other a lot at my school, however the more stoic ones do not hug.

interesting article

Indeed. It’s kind of strange that my school made the bottom front cover for the NY-Times on hugging… honestly. Don’t they have better things to report? haha
