What does it take to transfer to UC Berkeley (and get a Regents' and Chancellor's Scholarship)?

I’m always reading about amazing the people who get into UC Berkeley are. A bunch of leadership positions and people starting NPO and graduating early from high school and all of that good ol amazing stuff.
Besides getting a great GPA and completing my major pre-reqs, I want to do everything that I can to transfer into UC Berkeley and hopefully get a Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship. What does it take to get one? What do they look for specifically? What can I start doing to be in consideration for such an award two years from now?

First off, you should repost this in the UC Transfer sub-forum. Will you be transferring from a community college in California? Or a 4 year university?

Yes, a good GPA is usually needed to get in, but leadership positions are not exactly necessary, although they can help. Many students including myself have gotten in with minimal extracurriculars. As far as getting Regents’, that’s not really something you can plan for. Leadership activities will certainly help put you in contention, but very few people actually get it. Last year I think only one person on this site said they got it, and several of us had 3.9s or 4.0s. So it is very rare. It’s hard to know what they are specifically looking for, other than a high GPA and leadership positions.
