What happens after a preread?

Just trying to figure out what usually happens. Do you get an email or something? Does the coach or admissions call you? How do you find out the result?

Thanks!

Some coaches will pass this info on and some won’t. If you’re concerned about it, your student athlete should ask the coach.

By that point the recruit is getting frequent calls and texts from the coach. So that communication continues, and some coaches will tell the athlete they passed, and others won’t even think to mention it because it’s assumed they passed. I don’t know what communication happens when a preread is passed but an offer is not immediately forthcoming.

@Momofthree24 No, it’s not a concern per se — We just have never been in this before so don’t know how things generally go.

Unfortunately, there’s no blanket answer. It can definitely be a stressful process. As a parent, be prepared to help your child navigate any bumps in the road. And best wishes to your kid!

My dd did a few different prereads at schools from different conferences. In her experience, the coaches did get back to her pretty quickly via text/phone call. One sent an email. All made roster offers as soon as the prereads came back with the mention of support through admissions. The NESCAC school wanted an answer in two weeks. The Centennial school gave her as much time as she needed - but that preread was done months before the other two. The UAA school moved things along quickly once she shared the offer from the NESCAC school. This was also in Covid times (no overnight visits) so things may have played out differently back then.

We have had a few things happen for D3 options…

1-a more formal letter saying you will be favorably received through ED1, ED2 or regular decision followed up by a call explaining it from the coach.

2-an email from coach after admissions review and their coach due diligence indicating eligibility only through ED1

3-coach saying you are eligible through any application…no merit money.

4-3 schools go quiet…nothing but we haven’t chased. Assuming didn’t meet the standard. NESCAC and UAA.

Then received a D-1 preferred walk on yesterday. Interesting decisions ahead.

Thank you all so much. Gives me a better picture for sure! We actually just got an email and a phone call set up, NESCAC. We’ll see what happens from here.

good problems to have I would say

Were the schools able to determine how much merit money you would receive prior to applying to the school?

We only did an academic preread but will also need to do a financial one. We were not told of any merit money at all. I find it to be such an odd process to be honest — daughter was told though that they have a roster spot for her, to keep up her grades and to apply ED. She was also offered an overnight visit in September. All signs that seem positive…without actually getting into the school yet. Gaaaaaaaah!

Has she been offered coach support with admissions? That is what you really need to be asking. It’s possible they are waiting until the overnight visit to make sure she’s a good fit with the team, but you should definitely have an answer to this question before committing to an ED application.

Yes, I actually do know this and should’ve included in my response. She has been offered full support from Coach. They have seen her quite a few times on campus at clinics and some of the team know her already since she’s been attending since freshman year. She’s always greeted by name when they see her!

That’s great! The finish line is in sight it seems. But definitely make sure you understand the financials.

@Smileted were these after official/unoficial visits?

For D3 I don’t know whether official is used but we have had 2 true visits with meetings and tours with coaches alone no other players. We had one last week that I think is it. They took photos etc she will ED there unless something dramatic happens. We are canceling the others visits that are scheduled in a few weeks as this is above them in pecking order.

The D-1 were considered unofficial though they were with coaches on our own. They both said likely spring offers after the season. Roster spot but just not a firm deal. D1 folks are tough to nail down as they wait for others to commit, so we figure she just isn’t quite a strong enough fit at that level. Plus the schools are just not that strong anyway.

Regardless of division official technically means the school paid for the visit. Often the term used is overnight visit because the school is not paying for it.in addition sometimes the school does not do recruiting weekends but arranges for a similar day for a visiting athlete (attending classes, lunch with the team, etc)

OK, so you went for the visits/tours, then received offers, correct? How soon thereafter? And do they always take pics when you visit (the ones with the school name we see on posts)? Sorry I am so confused never having gone through this. We have a tour + visit with a coach scheduled for Oct after this week’s coach call with S25.

Congrats on the offers!

Our visits (mostly top D3s) generally had 2x as many athletes than offers. Several of the offers came after a break out meet at the end of the summer, but after a year of communication with the coach. Visits had been a mix of on our own (we always let the coach know and tried to coordinate with their availability, a couple of OVs, some teams have Jr days…). Some we had only done a basic tour, but after the offer coaches were very accommodating in planing out a “private” visit when we said we’d like an opportunity to meet the team and attend some classes before making a decision.
