What helps?

Hi CCers. As many most kids applying for prep school want to know, what helps. By this I mean when you are about to begin 8th grade and applying for prep schools what can you do to help yourself? Overall I feel to some my overall application may look great, to others shoddy. Personally I think I’m more towards the shoddy end of the stick. So here is my basic application what can I do right now. I’ve got six months. Here are my 7th grade grades.
Grades

Geometry (2 years ahead, I love math)- A+
Violin (not continuing)- A-
Technology- A-
PE- A
LA- A
SS- A
Science- A+

ECs

Violin 3 1/2 years (discontinued 2 months ago)
Tennis 3 years
Learning Mandarin
Summer Camp Internship/CIT (combination of the two)

Reading Comprehension- 30/40 (bad)
Mathematics- 44/45
Quantitative- 34/35

My hope is to go to Lick-Wilmerding High School. My brother goes there currently and I hope to join him. So what can I do and thanks for reading my post.

If you are not continuing violin next year, I think you should take a language course in school if they offer it.

I agree with kathryn

My sister went to Lick-Wilmerding High School and one of the string points of her admission was doing well at the dual interview. Applicants are put up to do an interview with another applicant at the same time. You pretty have to show that you can out do this person intellectually and have a bit of luck hoping they do not have as many extra curriculars as you.

Thank you all for your replies. Unfortunately, my school does not have any language courses, but thanks anyways. Letshopewegetin, I was wondering if you had any info about what goes on in the interview, if you do it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your replies guys, I really do thank you.

In the Lick dual interview you are sitting next to another applicant. They create this scenario to see your people skills and find how you compare to others. The best tip is to stay calm and composed. Occasionally you might be unlucky and be paired with a prodigy of some sort, but just make sure to stay confident.
