What if I can't handle college?

Hi,

My question now about college is: What if I can’t handle it? What if the classes are very hard? Do you get no chance for mistakes in colleges? Is it as cutthroat as many say?

Thanks.

Don’t even worry about the first question. If the university accepted you that means that they are confident that you will be able to do well. If they thought you couldn’t, they wouldn’t have considered you as a prospective U.Va. student. I’m sure it will be fine.

Oh, Bless your heart. Your’s is a good and serious question. Barq45 answered you correctly.

Some classes are a little bit intense, but honestly, in my way of thinking, there are high standards at UVA. Some students come in with a wild way of thinking about life away from home. There are parties, football games, beer, craziness. You need to be able to keep your feet on the ground and remember that the purpose of you (me) being here is to get a great education, and experience.

Kid’s are weeded out of classes, but I can tell that many got sloppy, and kind of deserved what they got.

If you stay attentive, study, have fun when you can, and don’t get behind>>you’ll be OK. If you party too hard, get in trouble and get behind>>it will be painful. Stay ahead and you’ll be fine. I mean it!!

I forgot to say too, that many courses have a policy that allows one to drop their worst grade. I think that really helped in my first semester when I was trying to get used to EVERYTHING! So yes, there is room for forgiveness. The TA’s for the major science courses have been very helpful too.

dude, just take the stupidest decisions in college…don’t give away too much to peer pressure or any kind of pressure for anything! just think before you act…and listen to what Barq said…be confident.

what?

archrival, I understand that you’re going through panic attacks right now but really, you should calm down. Enjoy life before it passes you by! Instead of asking “what if I can’t?”, ask yourself “what if I can?” What if you do brilliantly at UVa? What if you study for classes and ace tem as a result? And what are your other plans if you decide not to go to college?

I know this won’t sound that consoling, but if your in CAS, I think you only need to maintain a 2.00 GPA to graduate . (yeah. 2.00) If that’s not a leeway for mistakes, then I don’t know what is.

arch,

I am confident you will discover that you can study many more hours than in high school and STILL have much more free time than you had. You will spend much less time in class and much less time commuting. And there is very little chance that you have any more trouble with the work in college than HS.

Given your concern, I would recommend you start with a lighter load, easier classes or both. UVA requires a minimum course load, but will waive it if you have a good reason. If you have some AP credits and you talk to your advisor about your concerns, they will probably waive it for the first semester.

Take your broke ass home!

Or as Cav would say, man up! Admissions thinks you can handle it.

SEAS is not that cutthroat because it is so group-intensive. Jerks get ostracized real quick.

that was just a typo dude! I intended to write “dude, just DON’T take the stupidest…”

This should be a legitimate concern for you, archrival. People fail out all the time. Most end up in prison, on drugs, working at Taco Bell or shoveling sh1t at the zoo. Good luck!

Yes .

innovative: the part that didn’t make any sense was “don’t give away too much to peer pressure” I figured you had forgotten to write “don’t” :)

cav: hahahahahaha. what optimism.
