What is necessary to get into cal

yeah IM a junior and i was wondering what would be like minimums if there are any for berk…like GPA, SATs, etc…and how much do EC’s count??? For EC’s i got newspaper staff, music, MUN, JSA board, National Honor Roll, GOlden State exam whatever for Algebra, and Community service…would that be enough…thanks in advance!

oh and when people say UC gpa, is that weighted or non weighted? how do you calculate that

btw I’m indian *not native american…also i have sung indian carnatic music for the past ten years and im learning indian violin as well…do these help for EC’s???

oh btw, i got a 3.7 sophomore year nonweighted and on my sats i took the princeton review practice one and got a 2160 on a bad day, so im hoping to get a 2250 ish…i got a 780 on math and a 12 on my essay…

thanks

bump…

UC GPA is weighted but they have a limit on the weighted points you may add. Your EC’s will help if youve shown commitment

SInce you didn’t mention this, SAT II’s are important too, try to keep them high as possible

thanks!! anyone else?

hey teal wat’s the limit on the weighted points for the gpa?

does UC only count 2 honor courses at most for your sophomore year?

2 sophamore 6 jr.

So a total of 8

Excerpt from UC site:
Honors Courses
The University assigns extra points for up to four units of University-certified honors level and advanced placement courses taken in the last three years of high school: A=5 points, B=4 points, C=3 points. No more than two years of UC-approved honors level courses taken in the 10th grade may be given extra points. A grade of D in an honors or advanced placement course does not earn extra points.

The courses must be in the “a-g” subjects

so even if it doesnt say that its a weighted class in tenth grade, i can choose two honors courses to weight???

no, it has to be approved honors

ok basically the highest uc gpa u can get freshmen year is a 4.2 jr year 4.6 makeing the highest total a 4.4. Although i have heard of people getting higher but that may just be bs.

For clarification, i think socalnick meant sophomore year instead of freshmen, since freshmen grades don’t count :)

since theres a cap of 8, once you go over the cap, even if you get A’s, your gpa actually goes down. but i dont think gpa is that important since that’s true

wait so only 4 units out of the ENTIRE three years or four units per year
this sucks…

Well. You can get higher than a 4.2. For example let’s say you take 6 UC (a-g) courses 2 of them being honors your highest could be a 4.33. Junior year you could potentially get a 5.0.

what don’t you understand? its impossible to get a 5.0 gpa by the end of junior year, theres a cap of 8 points. unless you take only 8 a-g classes in 10th AND 11th grade total, and they are all honors, then it is impossible

No, I meant just for Junior year you could end up with a 5.0. That combined with 10th grade would be a 4.67 UC gpa.

no the highest ive heard of in jr. year is a 4.6 its works more like (unweighted GPA)+.2*(number of approved honors courses taken). somehow i hav heard of uc gpa’s slightly higher then 4.4 like around 4.42, but uc gpa really dosnt matter unless your going for elc. most ucs recalcalcuate gpa using their own system (although it dosnt use freshmen year).

is that accurate?

hey guys my college counsellor knows the pple at admissions for all the UCs. basically they say they only accept 8 but when it comes down to it they count every approved honors and ap you take. the catch is it has to be approved. almost no honors classes are approved so take that into consideration
