What is Notre Dame known for? Besides football

Besides athletics/football, what are they known for? US NewsWeek lists them at 19 in the nation so that’s why I’m interested…didn’t know they were that good for academics.

Not much…

they’re pretty good in hockey too.

they are known for Rudy…

I was gonna say hockey too.

Its a strong undergrad school.

… says US News.

Agreed, there isn’t much it’s known for, though I think I’d (vaguely) heard that its business program is good.

Notre Dame is solid in many fields. It is good in Business, Engineering, the humanities, the social sciences and the hard sciences.

I’d say that ND provides one of the best undergrad bonding experiences - both with the school and with one’s classmates. Once a Domer, always a Domer. They usually vie with Princeton for the highest percentage of alumni contributors.

They are, of course, strong academically. The campus is gorgeous. There has been a lot of new construction in recent years, including an amazing performing arts building and a ginormous bookstore, but they have taken pains to integrate all of the new buildings with the traditional architecture. (Don’t expect swoopy Frank Gehry designs or anything that looks like a recent arrival from another planet.) To me, though, their key selling point is the combination of tradition and undergrad experience.

My son has had a great undergrad experience. As said above, once a Domer always a Domer (though I wish he would go to a Michigan grad school to temper that a bit.) Great sense of belonging is instilled and the network is huge, both from alumni and subway fans. Undergrad business school is good and law school is pretty good with excellent placement after graduation.

Notre Dame is a Jesuit school. Jesuit schools vary but, by and large, they have a strong commitment to teaching. Notre Dame does not have a reknowned research faculty.

Correction is in order. ND is NOT Jesuit. It is run by the Congregation of the Holy Cross. see [Congregation of Holy Cross - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Congregation of Holy Cross - Wikipedia).

Thanks for the corrrection, bdmrad. I do think my point stands, though, that ND is mostly about teaching and not about research.

Agreed. Father Jenkins has made increasing research a high priority. We’ll see how that works.

The name Lee could be white or black.

lee can be an asian too…

Which is my point–not all the time (Lee in this case) can you rely on surnames.

For those who said “not much,” you really have no idea what you’re talking about. The school would not attract the high quality of students it does if it were not considered academically prestigious.

^ academically prestigious in what fields?

maggiejeter: to be honest, I honestly haven’t heard much about its academic prestige; its athletic prestige, well that’s a different story. (And I lived in the Midwest for many years.) As the OP suggested, it’s athletics/football that ND is best known for.
