What is the argument you and your spouse keep coming back to?

After DH goes painstakingly dictates a shopping list to me, he leaves it at home on the kitchen table. Numerous phone calls ensue.

Our house is a four-level split; why DH or the guys think I can hear them in the basement when I am upstairs taking a shower is beyond me.

DH will call me and tell me he’s going to leave work by eight. 8:45, I get a call. He’s still there. Ten pm, he’s headed out the door. Walks in just in time for Jon Stewart at 11:00. I don’t bother thinking about making dinner until he calls and tells me he’s at the Metro station.

DH and I usually don’t argue about anything, because whenever we do the subject changes into “how dare you criticize me” and we end up talking about how quickly we can get a divorce. Luckily we agree about most things, and the rest we just let go.

To all the men who won’t get hearing aids - if Clinton can wear one, you can. We are tired of repeating ourselves!

Amen about the hearing aids…our main argument is the volume of the tv…I know if the situation was reversed, he would insist I get a hearing aid.

As I yell down the stairs, “Turn it down”!

Mine calls me when he’s at work, talks to me about whatever he called about then tells me he’s so busy he needs to get off phone and get back to work like i’m the one who called and i’m wasting his valuable time.

Regarding hearing aids: I kept telling my DH he needed one because the tv seems loud and he never “hears” me. The he brought home the results of his hearing test at work and all is fine. So apparently he can “hear” me…hmmmmm

My wife’s favorite line is, “You can do that with your next wife.” It actually works pretty well at averting arguments. After all, she’s not saying no, right?

*My wife’s favorite line is, “You can do that with your next wife.” *

lol…

That’s a play on what we often say to our kids…you can do that when you have your own home.

My wife is like this. We have to be somewhere at 7:00, and she’ll call and say she’s on her way home from work at 6:45. I can hear her computer shutting off in the background. It takes more than 15 minutes just to drive home. But she doesn’t think she’s running late.

My version of this: you can stop and do that on your way to my funeral.

My version: “Maybe your next wife will be perfect [or a general contractor]!”

Fat chance. I can’t see anyone else putting up with him. ;)

My H doesn’t like how I park my car in the garage. His car goes in another garage door…a good 10 feet away from my car… so what I do doesn’t affect him in the slightest.

Since our driveway is situated in a way that parking “straight in” our garage makes backing out more difficult, I park my car at a very slight angle. This allows me to easily get in and get out without a lot of backing up and adjusting. There is still plenty of room on both sides of my car.

It’s really NO big deal that my car sits in the garage at a slight angle…yet it annoys my H and he likes to comment about it.

Finally, I asked my H…What 5 “faults” am I allowed to have that you won’t comment about. (I don’t mean serious faults like drug use, etc) That kind of shocked him because he knows that he has faults that we all just “put up with” and don’t criticize…like moodiness in the morning, horrendous penmanship (printing and cursive), spills food/drinks on his clothes almost daily, eats in the middle of the night and leaves a mess, can’t boil water, often misplaces his keys, wallet, cell phone, etc.

Well, once I asked him what 5 faults I’m allowed to have that he won’t complain about, he couldn’t come up with one. I think that has him thinking… Maybe he’ll think that in the grand scheme of things how I park is no biggie. :)

^ Speaking of cars… I am about 7" taller than my wife. When I drive I have to put the seat all the way back. She has to bring it pretty far forward.

It has taken me years of badgering (more like decades!) to get her to remember to put the seat all the way back after she drives my car, because I cannot physically get in the car unless the seat is all the way back. Of course, I don’t realize the seat is not back until I’ve already banged my knees on the steering column.

It’s a stupid little thing, but so annoying…

Don’t tell me no one argues about the television remote. Maybe I just missed it.

The other night I asked to watch a certain show. My hubby started to object until I reminded him that it is only about the 3rd time I have expressed a preference of what to watch in our 200 years of marriage. Really. He loves the remote so much that I just decided early on that I would cede that entire real estate to him.

I have a few shows I watch on Hulu at my computer (with headphones).

DH and I have come to realize we rarely argue since DD left for college in 2006. We have been married for 26+ years. The majority of our arguments stemmed from me staying on DD to straighten/clean her room on a regular basis. He didn’t think a messy room where a path to the bed was barely navigable was a big deal and I did. I grew up being responsible for daily chores and keeping a neat and clean bedroom. DH grew up with someone doing it all for him. Happily, I’ve learned an old dog can learn new tricks.

We solved that problem with Tivo. We also have a TV in the rec room so a person could watch something else at the same time if desired. My H is a remote hog.

Tivo is just great. I can record what I want to watch. It’s also a blessing because H has a nasty habit of talking while the TV is on, and before Tivo, I would miss what was being said, now I just hit rewind. Sometimes I have to hit rewind 4-5 times…and then he gets the hint. lol

If the remote is missing, there is an 82.7% chance that my wife it sitting on it. Every time I’m looking for it, I say, “Could you please stand up and make sure you’re not sitting on it?” She says, “I’m not sitting on it. I’d be able to feel it if I were sitting on it.” Then I search for five more minutes before pleading, “Will you PLEASE stand up and make sure you’re not sitting on it???” And sure enough, 82.7% of the time, she was sitting on it.

We don’t actually argue about this anymore, but let’s say we have differing philosophies about the lighting in and around our home. If I am going to be home alone during the evening, I walk through the house and turn on all the outside lights: the driveway, porches, deck. As soon as my husband gets home, he turns them all off.

I also like more lights on in the house than he does, but over the years he has modified my behavior quite a bit. I still insist on the light over the stove staying on all night, though.

Many of our former “arguments” can now be carried out silently, since we have all of each other’s opinions memorized.

^^^
Yes! The “stop altering my environment” argument.

So true! – although perhaps I sometimes overestimate my mind reading powers, and my spouse is thinking of something else entirely…
