I was just reading an article on CBS- on line. It was about the highest earning celebrities. Or maybe female celebrities. Anyway, Taylor Swift was number one. But Kim Kardasian was on the list.
OMG, why is this person so famous and getting richer and richer? She does not sing, dance, act or do anything artistic. She is not an athlete, model or scholar. Not a news woman or celebrity chef. What the heck does she do? And WHY is she so much apart of our news? Not just tabloid sites.
You can search for lists of people that are “famous for no reason” - the Kardashians and Paris Hilton will almost always show up on those lists.
People continue to click on links about them, driving money to sites, and thus they continue to get paid.
Truly, I am a news junkie. I’m constantly reading and watching the news. I know zero about the current lives of any of these people. Couldn’t even pick most of them out of a photo lineup. It’s easy to avoid the stories if you don’t want to see them. Heck, the only time I really see these names and stories is here on CC. And had the title of this thread been more specific, I would’ve avoided it 
I too couldn’t care less about the Kardashians.
I’m not interested in the Kardashians either. However, coincidentally, I’m listening to the BBC and there was just a story about Kim being on the cover of Forbes. Also, in one episode of the current season of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt there is running joke where someone makes an offhand reference to one of the Kardashians and then stops to wonder how they know what they happen to know about them.
I don’t like any of the Kardashians but they have been savvy about making themselves household names. Kim has been the most adept at turning that into money with clothing and makeup lines, games where you can be her, etc. As awful as they are, at least they’re not the Duggars!
Entertainment is a huge business in the US. People who are able to capture the interests of large numbers of people (even if those people are not you) will tend to do well.
I enjoy watching phony people pretending to be living “real” life on a reality show.(sarcasm) it is mindless garbage but there are enough low IQ people in the world that show like housewifes ,honey boo boo, Kardashians, etc…can get massive audiences. I am addicted to shows like mystery diagnosis, monsters inside me , etc… of course the down side to watching those shows is every time you sneeze you think it maybe the first sign of a super rare virus or something.
Is that any different conceotually from Real Housewives in xxx?
Plenty of high IQ people watch those shows. They are not an intelligent test. (not a personal defense, just to add. I don’t have a television at all most of the time, but i know someone who’s been home with a serious condition who got addicted to HONY while stuck on the couch. I spent days keeping her company, and I managed to get caught up in the “story lines” myself, lol.)
^I had to skim through an entire season of The Bachelor because one of my clients liked the house. It was easy to see how these shows could suck you in.
When I read the thread title and thought of the events of the past few weeks, this is also not what I expected, but here’s my answer -

" why is this person so famous and getting richer and richer? " - because YOU are paying for it!!! Even with this post, she is getting the FREE publicity (a.k.a free advertisement) from YOU. If nobody paid attention, not a single person cared, would she be rich? Not a chance.
Based on very little information, ie very few observations it appears to me that Kim Kardashian is a highly skilled businesswoman, particularly in the area of marketing and self promotion. Seems these talents are valued very highly in our country these days.
We as a culture have the attention span of gnats. To me why people watch them is like why people play the lottery. You can imagine living a different life for a short time. After all, they have no skills or talent and they made it big, why can’t I? I’ve never watched the show, I really don’t care about them in slightest, but hey, they figured out how to promote themselves in a pretty impressive way. I think we pay for what we value that we can’t do ourselves. We all give lip service to teachers, but there are tens of thousands of them, the idea of spending all day with kids is not appealing to many people so it’s not like we are all clamoring and paying big money to see them.
Btw…I really haven’t heard about Paris Hilton in years - maybe she’s old news now?
Agreed. ^^ She and her mother and sisters turned being pretty and rich and sleazy into richer and richer because people will watch anything on TV and the internet these days.
Witness the viral videos of cats, babies (Charlie bit my finger) and such.
I think people also like to watch and follow so they can feel superior. So many people enjoy criticizing others. The Kardashians ask for it by putting their lives on display as they do, but I find most interesting what it says about the people judging them.
