What is Yale good for?

Oh, and yes, among the top schools, the music at Yale can’t be beat. Especially for sacred music.

Well, lets not go overboard, here.

Former waitlistee Becky wound up at a pretty strong school of music at the University of Michigan.

Michigan has absolutely fabulous music. But music is an odd discipline-for each instrument and each sub-discipline, there are schools with their strengths and weaknesses. For Jazz, voice, and conducting, Michigan is absolutely top rate. If you want a strong Cello faculty, go to USC or Rice. Harvard and Cornell are both great for musicology. The University of Indiana has an excellent organ program.

I would say, though, that for organ performance and other areas (like choral conducting) convered by the Institute of Sacred Music, as well as in a few other places, Yale has unmachable (or at least comparable only to the very very best) faculty and resources (within the US, that is).

Obviously it’s not quite NYU or USC but how is Yale’s film studies program? (I’m looking for the complete liberal arts education, that’s why I chose Yale over a film school for undergrad).

Two of my friends are film studies majors, and they seem to enjoy it a lot. One of them is over in Hollywood this summer, and I believe that he’s interning for Universal. We also have groups like Bulldog Productions with budgets (!) to film on location, hire actors, etc. If you have questions about courses or opportunities for film studies at Yale, I’m sure that one or both of them would be able to answer your questions either this summer or once you’re on campus. Also be sure to check out the available courses in the Blue Book.

I hear that the “connections” (from jobs to internships) at Yale are pretty amazing. I would love to hear from people who are studying film about their overall experience. Thanks thesmartazz.

Is Yale better than Harvard in any field? What about math/science fields?

yale clowns on harvard–and every other american university–in history, english, fine arts, and music.

Why can’t the quality of a Yale program not stand on its own?

Why is it always necessary to define its quality relative to Harvard, and even (a la the prior poster) to denigrate Harvard in order (presumably) to make Yale look relatively better?

Byerly, I’m sure you would have no qualms whatsoever saying that Harvard “clowns” (although im not sure you would employ such a crude idom) Yale in areas like math and most of the sciences, which it indeed does. The fact is, this poster did not denigrate Harvard any more than you regularly denigrate other institutions.

I have never — EVER ---- “denigrated” any institution

it seems a bit silly, byerly, that you exert so much effort into lauding harvard on a yale chat board and then berate yale students for making a comparison between the two schools.

i have no interest in denigrating harvard. it is an excellent university in many respects, and i would be very fortunate to go there for grad school. if i truly did desire, as you say, to denigrate it, i would spend my time on a harvard chat board, espousing the many virtues of yale.

I encourage you to “espouse virtues” at every opportunity!

So much more constructive than running down the “opposition” in a negative fashion!

is Yale also well known for its grad programs, or like Princeton is it’s grad programs a bit limited? just curious

Yale has renowned professional schools of Law and Medicine, as well as a architecture, art, drama, management, and lets not forget the graduate school of music.

i’d beleive most of that, although Management i’ve heard some odd stories about, and it seems a bit underwhelming comparitvely to other management programs, as well as yales own other top grad programs.

I also think its PhD programs in history, psychology, polysci, english, french, and biology are tops (I know only first hand of the biology program) - I’m sure I’m missing some. Don’t forget forestry and nursing as well.

Why is it that most seem to regard physical science at Yale as sub-par? At the undergrad level are the differences between top institutions in distinct areas that significant?

In reference to Byerly’s post about biological science rankings, I’m happy to see Stanford beating Harvard in SOMETHING academic. Our polisci department comes close, though.

arent Stanford’s science departments all generally better than Harvard’s?
