Not MY crime but blueberries IN the batter YES! vs. blueberry sweet stuff plopped on top NO!
Aw, funny how things hit you isn’t it? I lost a long time friend of almost 50 years, worked together for 30 years, his birthday was just on Sunday and he was buried last Wednesday. In all my thoughts and memories of him over the last couple of weeks I had forgotten that this is how he ate!
What does she think about foods that are composed of other foods mixed together or combined, such as soups, salads, jambalaya, sandwiches, pizza, etc.?
My mom used to make us sardine “sandwiches”. They were French bread sprinkled with red wine vinegar topped with sardines, yum!
I’m not sure whether this qualifies as a food crime, but it received some comments from the person preparing the pizza, particularly with my past history of either ordering plain or green peppers as only toppings. Total pre-tax cost was $7.50 after gift card discount.
So far I am enjoying it. It was prepared well with extra time in the oven to account for the increased toppings, making it both thoroughly cooked and giving the crust an extra crisp texture, which I prefer. It is heavier than I am used to – both literally and figuratively, particularly on the left side. There are too many toppings for me to get a distinct flavor for each of the individual toppings, but the combination seems to work well. In the past, I haven’t been a fan of chicken on pizza, but when combined with other meats (chicken + ham + steak),it works much better. The tomatoes and asiago cheese add to the flavor and desired moisture level. The right side is more safe toppings that I knew I wouldn’t have a problem with, and I also am enjoying that side.
That’s quite a pizza! Is this Dominos? I know folks tend to put them down but in our city they are super nice folks and run it like a well oiled machine, plus you can’t beat their pricing, especially when buying for teens!
That would be a crime here in NJ if pizzerias even had those ingredients.
Wait, what? You don’t have mushrooms on pizza?
That made my day – I nearly spit out the water I had just sipped when I saw “You Saved $35.00”. ROFL
It does. Any meat other than pepperoni is a felony.
In NJ sausage is a misdemeanor while pineapple and ham is considered a capital offense.
I would say you got your $10+ worth in your order. It looks very tasty to me!
Not that I agree that all of those toppings are pizza-worthy but NJ pizzerias may have most of them but never all on a single pizza.
Yes, it was Dominos. They currently have a promotion, “any crust, any toppings for $9.99”. My pre-tax price was actually $7.50 because I paid with Costco gift cards that were purchased at 25% discount. I used the promotion as an opportunity to try some topping combinations I haven’t had before.
I live in CA. Fast food prices are higher than elsewhere, even more so after the recent increase to $20 minimum wage. Menu price is $17 + $3 per regular topping or $3.50 per premium topping. If you have a lot of toppings, the menu prices add up quickly.
We have barely any Dominos in our state any more. I’ve never been very fond of them anyway and especially if they’re inconvenient. There are boutique and pieology but not too many “regular” low cost pizza places.
I agree with you about pineapple. Pineapple was an available topping, and I intentionally excluded it. The strong sweet flavor is overwhelming . I find that pineapple ruins the pizza. However, ham has a far more bland flavor that compliments several of the other toppings and flavors. Some people like or dislike the taste, but it’s not overpowering like pineapple. I’d make a similar comment about pineapple vs ham on sandwiches.
While eating the pizza above, the meat I found to have the strongest flavor was the chicken. While I didn’t dislike the chicken, if I order chicken again, next time I’ll choose the option for a “light” topping.
A survey in which pizza toppings are rated by like/dislike preference is below:
Interesting, personally I do not like extra cheese at all and request light cheese wherever possible…
Same with cream cheese on a bagel - the thinnest layer possible…
Our family prefers light cheese as well, especially those who are lactose intolerant. They have learned they do better with hard cheeses like Parmesan.
I consider a food crime to be misleading ordering, including in regards to the light/extra cheese mentioned above. For example, the Dominos nutrition page shows the following. Note that “regular cheese” on a cheese only pizza is the same as “extra cheese” on a pizza with toppings. “light cheese” on a cheese only pizza is similar to “regular cheese” on a pizza with toppings. If you don’t have experience, it’s not clear how much cheese you are going to get with the order. And you may be surprised, if you decide to try a plain pizza without toppings.
I normally don’t order extra cheese, as I prefer the lighter standard amount of cheese that comes on pizzas with toppings. However, on this order I had shredded parmesan + asiago mixture added to the standard (lighter) cheese on one side and provolone added on the other. I was surprised to find that I preferred the parmesan asiago side.
I intentionally avoided some of the toppings options, including some cheese options. Based on experience the toppings that I don’t like on pizza include the following:
- Non-tomato fruits – I’ve tried pineapple, pears, and figs
- Nuts – I’ve tried walnuts and peanuts
- Anchovies and to a lesser extent other fish
- Potatoes or other starches
- Spicy toppings, such as jalapeno, Italian sausage, and buffalo sauce
- Cheddar and American cheese. A larger number of different types of cheeses isn’t always better. Some types of cheeses work far better on pizza than others.
- Most higher fat vegetables, such as olives and artichokes
- Some other vegetable toppings such as carrots, cucumber/zucchini and broccoli (the Seinfeld episode about cucumber on pizza being a food crime was correct). However, I think green/red pepper and spinach are great.
- Onions
- Any type of non-tomato based dressing/drizzle, particularly if substituted for the tomato sauce
