What kind of schools I might be able to get in? just want to have an idea (int'l student, HS senior, CA)

Look at UT Dallas, UT Arlington, and Texas Tech. You should get good merit aid at these universities. Texas Tech even has guaranteed merit for your stats, and all three will give you an out of state waiver if you get at least $1k per year in competitive merit aid.

What about the University of New Mexico?

The International Amigo Scholarship will give you instate tuition. Tuition, fees, housing and meals will run about $26K/year.

Amigo is a guaranteed for stats scholarship. Eligible applicants are automatically considered. No separate application required.

Apply early and have guaranteed, affordable acceptance in hand. It’ll take some pressure off. Albuquerque is much more interesting and liberal place than…. say, Lubbock, where Texas Tech is located

UNM is starting up a new bio(medical) engineering program beginning this fall. UNM also has a pretty good bio program with an adjacent med school and cancer center for research opportunities.Plus 2 National Laboratories are close by for additional research opportunities.

International airport is 15 minutes from campus. And there are multiple direct flights to Albuquerque from all major (and many smaller) California airports. LA to ABQ is under 2 hours by plane.
