What looks better on college app?

Hi

This is just a quick topic about applying to med school

Which looks better on an application (from a top engineering school)-- undergraduate research and publishings or leadership positions?

Thanks!
Joshua

They’re both important but all things being equal and assuming you’re applying mid-tier, leadership is more important. Honestly, though, the truth is, leadership skills are something you should be applying in most positions you hold

I’d take a publication over a presidency, but I focused on research heavy medical schools.

Depends on President of what. =)

That depends upon degree. Actual, peer-reviewed publications are a big deal but so would being the owner/founder/president of a successful medical missions program to a poor, inner-city families. The relative research equivalent of a club “president” would be an academic paper published in your school’s “research journal.” It’s not exactly meaningless, but it certainly does not have anywhere near the level of impact that a true publication (as in peer-reviewed) or a presentation at a national conference would have.
