What movies did you see this Thanksgiving? Thoughts?

I second the recommendation for Brooklyn. Also saw the Peanuts movie with college freshman D, and we both enjoyed it.

I saw Bridge of Spies and Martian in the past month. Liked both, especially Bridge of Spies. Saw Mockingjay today. Entertaining and had to see it, but not as strong as the other movies in the series. Sad to see Philip Seymour Hoffman on screen and to know we won’t be seeing him again.

Want to see: Spotlight (not playing near me yet), Brooklyn, and ANYTHING with Tom Hardy in it.

Mockingjay Part 2 on the Ultrascreen in reclining chairs in Row G for $5 before 11:00 a.m.!

Maybe someday I will be rich enough that I don’t only go to movies during days/times when they are $5.

Not exactly a new movie, but we saw a three hour version of The Hobbit. Someone took the three movies and cut out all the stupid stuff. (Extended battles, love affairs with elves that aren’t in the books, all the stuff Gandalf does when he disappears.) We enjoyed it.

Saw Steve Jobs yesterday. A little different than what I expected as it only covered a specific time period of his life. But a good movie, and I thought Micheal Fassbender was terrific.

Another vote for Bridge of Spies, I thought it was great. The script had just the right amount of comic relief thanks to the Coen Brothers (“How’d you lose your coat?” “You know… spy stuff.”)

I saw Carol last week, and HIGHLY recommend. It’s a romance between Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, set in Manhattan in the 1950s, and it’s just visually stunning. Brooklyn is also beautiful and really sweet. I can’t sit still because I’m seeing Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight this week and I’m beyond pumped. I love his movies.

I do not like any of new movies. It takes me usually about 5 min. to realize that the movie is not for me and I rather sleep than watch it. I just stick to few old movies that I watch over and over and over. Some of them, I may have watched about 100 times, but I rather watch them again, then watch something that I do not like at all. Hunger Games is not my type of movies although I like Jennifer, she is good.

We saw Mockingjay and it was well done. Not as exciting as the previous movies but it resolved things. I cannot wait for Star Wars in December. Yes, I am a geek.

^^There are soooo many different kinds of recent movies out there - comedies, romance, action, thriller, animated, even musicals. You don’t like ANY of them?? Do you read the same books over and over, and listen to the same old music over and over? Eat the same foods over and over without trying anything new?

To me, there’s joy to be had in discovering new things I like, movies and otherwise. I don’t want to be a person who lives in the past.

I do not have time to see movies very often and there are not very many we can enjoy with our family. Our family favorites are Tommy Boy, Elf, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc. (all boys) So, yes I see many of the same movies over and over. I just saw The Notebook after 10 years. What can I say? I have many boys. I drew a line in the sand at Nacho Libre and Anchor Man 2.

mathmom, that version sounds wonderful! The battles got really old really quickly.

I didn;t see any movies this weekend but over the past few weeks I’ve seen Spotlight, Bridge of Spies and The Martian. I thought both Spotlight and Bridge of Spies were both excellent, really well made, beautifully filmed and excellent cast and well acted. Actually Spotlight is likely the best movie I have seen this year. I enjoyed The Martian, very entertaining and hopefully I think a film that should interest kids in science. I liked the emphasis on the step by step problem solving both by Matt Damon’s character and at NASA. I also appreciated that NASA was shown as multi-cultural as compared to the NASA shown in The Right Stuff years ago, probably accurately depicted.

Just thinking about Nacho Libre cracks me up. There are a few silky movies that have us all in stitches…that one and when Napoleon Dynamite came out.
