What Qualifies as a Sport?

^ That was more directed to dblazer.

What’s really annoying is when band kids get letter jackets. They aren’t athletes and they don’t deserve them.

We’ve left out one of the best sports, cheer-leading

Meh, I don’t really care about that. It;s a time commitment to the school and I value it. Usually, they get a different color letter anyway. But you’re right it’s not a sport. They may very well be athletes.

[Oh yea, cheerleading…how could I forget that sport…](<a href=“I don't want to live on this planet anymore - YouTube”>I don't want to live on this planet anymore - YouTube)

What about professional hot dog eating?

^ What kind of professional hot dog eating? wink wink ;)

^Both…the one on ESPN and the one on pay-per-view.

@almost there: I lulzeled. +3 to you.
This would normally only be a +1, but the lack of previous lols justify the two bonus points

Alright…so I’ve kinda arrived at the conclusion that the definition of sport is whatever you want it to be! (cheesy, i know)

and LOL @ TheSpasticTroll

Is competitive sex a sport?

Well its physical. I’d think it is more of a type of performance art.

lol

10char

some of the stuff on here makes no sense.
Marching band is not a sport because the point of it isn’t to get fit or show off sporting talent
and sports can be decided by judges, ie diving, gymnastics etc

Marching band is the sport of the arts. YES, IT IS A SPORT.

They did this study with some guys in DCI and during one show performance, they worked just as hard as a marathon runner. There are so many studies that show that marching band is one of the hardest sports out there. Plus, it’s actually quite dangerous. This one kid was a few steps off coming into a company front backwards and a sousa was also marching backwards into it right next to him and they collided. The one kid got a concussion and the sousa broke a finger. Plus, marching band has so many more components to think about and worry about than most sports: technique, tempo, posture, choreography, sets, music, phrasing, eyes, breathing, etc.

^just because it’s dangerous doesn’t make it a sport. 1 person per year dies by bean bag chair, that doesn’t make having a bean bag chair a sport

^I didn’t say it was a sport just because it’s dangerous. Did you skip the rest of the post? :)

“A sport of the arts” lol

As an amateur marathon runner warming up for the race maybe but not as hard as a good marathoner on his 25th mile after already peeing his pants from sheer physical exhaustion.

Link to one. It might be kind of difficult because that was a complete lie.

That’s sooo crazy. Its not like people get injured and collide with other people walking down a hallway or anything. If someone got a concussion falling off the stage at a spelling bee or broke his finger playing computer games are they sports? The existence of injuries doesn’t make it a sport and its ridiculous to say that band gets more injuries than a real sport. The best example of an injury you can think of is a some kid that obviously isn’t coordinated enough to play a real sport accidentally running into a tuba just emphasizes the ridiculousness of your argument.

Lots of things have tons of components. that doesn’t make them sports. I’m pretty sure the dancers that also perform during halftime have to deal with these things and even though they are closer to being a sport than band they really aren’t one.

From what I’ve seen all of these people who claim marching band is a sport have never played a real sport or if they have it was like soccer when they were 5. I challenge all of you to actually try running a marathon or training two or three hours a day seven days a week so your passable at a particular sport.

I’ve been in 5k charity events, and I was a part of my school’s marching band. Even when I’m trying, marching band is easy to perform in and it came naturally to me, while running in those events is not.

I’m not saying marching band is easy (DCI is REALLY intense) for everyone in the world, but it’s not a sport, come on now.

As for dblazer’s argument that running is not a sport because it does not require skill / honing skills, that is completely false. Good form and strategy is a huge part of running. In sprinting, just perfecting the start is difficult - how long your first steps should be and when to raise your head are only part of it. Then the ways you move your arms and put power through your legs must be perfected.
At farther distances, how to build your speed and where to be throughout the race so you have not wasted too much energy in the beginning and can peak at the right time to win are crucial aspects.
After all, numerous running events are olympic sports. This means that the Olympic committee has determined running to be a sport and it is widely practiced as a sport world wide.
