What Qualifies as a Sport?

^ Running events (track and field, etc) are sports. The actual activity of running in itself is not, otherwise you would call push-ups sports.

^agreed

Track is a sport, jogging isn’t. When I go to the gym and see the treadmills packed with 50 year old moms walking at 4mph for 40 mins I don’t think they are participating in a sport…

baseball isn’t a sport

Ugh. You guys are acting dumb. Marching band is not a sport because it’s not an OBJECTIVE COMPETITION.

This isn’t an argument of semantics, it’s just the fact that marching band competitions are subjectively judged.

I have plenty of respect for marching banders. I could probably never be in one–but it’s not a sport…

I would just like to point out that if we define a “sport” as something that is objective, competitive, and physical, then even the SAT counts as a sport.

Competitive: Sure, you’re trying to get into college
Objective: Doesn’t get more objective than this
Physical: Those hand cramps from churning out two pages in under 25 minutes can get pretty exhaustive

I’m guessing we’re going to need a better definition for “sport”. But just for the record, marching band is not a sport. It is a fine art, like dancing or being in a play. Even watching TV is a physical activity, so don’t tell me that that’s a sport just because it’s physical.

The idea of what’s a sport or not a sport is extremely subjective. Leave it at that.

No, there is one answer and one answer only.

If you have to ask, it probably isn’t a sport.
