What random vintage bands are your kids/their friends obsessed with?

My daughter’s BF is obsessed with Steely Dan. I find this so strange. They aren’t bad or anything, but it seems like a pretty random band to be obsessed with. Is there some random vintage band appreciation movement that I am unaware of?

My D24 has always liked older music - went through a long Smiths, Radiohead, Cure phase. Most recently, she surprised me by putting on a playlist full of the Dead while we were on a long drive together. Most adorably, she said, “I know this makes me sound like I’m 60 years old, but they really just don’t make songs like they used to” :joy:

Wouldn’t call them “random”, but C26 is super into Talking Heads.

It’s especially funny for me because he is a classical musician.

But honestly, kids these days don’t seem to limit themselves to liking or listening to bands from any specific era. Old pop music seems to be just as popular in their friend group as more recent music.

I actually still listen to ALL of those bands, all the time. They are still cool. So your D has good taste too!

I don’t see Steely Dan as cool in any way, or musically significant.

Again, super cool. Not random enough though.

I don’t find the obsession with Steely Dan strange at all. But then I love “ the Dan”.

Many young youtube music reactors seem to love Steely Dan almost to obsession. I like them but not to the degree that I see a lot of music reactors showing. A lot of these reactors would be surprised to hear someone say they are not musically significant.

Queen, Boney-M, Abba, and a few more from the 70s.

Mine loves all the 70s and 80s bands. Lots of Styx on her playlist but most of the other popular bands too.

Among musicians, Steely Dan is considered one of the most intelligent and musically complex creators of music, though some ding them for being too meticulous/perfect.

They’re signature yacht rock, so I like them.

Have no clue what our son listens to besides the voices in his head.

D22 has loved Queen for forever. D26 and D29 seem to listen to a huge variety of music across different eras - for them, songs aren’t tied to time periods like the 80s or the Motown era or whatever. They’re all just songs.

Wow, am I just a loser for not appreciating the genius of Steely Dan??? I mean, they are fine, but I just don’t think they are anything special. But I will tell you what kicked my butt today. I shared this with my D’s BF, and he informed me that apparently this was featured in Guitar Hero 3. So I am definitely the loser for not knowing that.

I did something right. My son loves “my music “60-80s with some good 90s bands.

Ann Wilson is amazing.

My kids love Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind and Fire.
We trained them well.

Isn’t good music good music no matter how new or old it is?

Kudos for people who don’t put music into an age box.

Whats the difference between younger people liking “vintage “ music an “vintage” people” (us) liking current music??
